i'm harris faulkner in tonight for shepard smith. this is the fox report. number of people applying for unemployment benefits going up for the first time in four weeks. but you wouldn't know it from looking at wall street today. the dow closing up 136 points. the nasdaq gaining 24. the s&p 500 picking up 13. investors apparently not bothered by the labor department's report showing new jobless claims rose by 15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 381,000, higher than many economists had predicted. they say the labor market is actually getting better because the average for the past four weeks shows unemployment claims dropping by nearly 6,000 to the lowest level since 2008. also helping stocks, the news that the number of people who signed contracts on new homes rose last month. to their highest level in a year and a half. doug lieu luzader is live in honolulu, hawaii where most of those numbers probably brighten the holiday break. doug, owe aloha. >> we have seen contradictory numbers on the economy. some numbers good some not so great. the labor number

i'm harris faulkner in tonight for shepard smith. today an incredibly important day for the campaigns and those trying to shore up support before tuesday's first in the nation presidential contest. the latest poll from nbc news and marist showing former massachusetts governor mitt romney duking it out with texas congressman ron paul for the top spot in iowa. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum surging into third place while former house speaker newt gingrich has now faded into fifth behind texas governor rick perry. similar results in the real clear politics average of recent polls. romney and paul fighting it out for the top spot with the other contenders well behind. of course, anything can happen in iowa. and the candidates are crisscrossing the hawkeye state right now. judging by turnout in the, past, perhaps about 4% of iowa's population will participate in the caucuses. or to put it another way, we are all currently focused on what four hundredths of 1% will focus on in iowa. may not sound in the past. iowa with make or b

richard norton smith stole my thunder about the 1956 convention and jack kennedy. one of my favorite comments was something that harry adlai stevenson, that he spent more time thinking about what he was going to do rather than doing it. he spent a lot more time talking to college presidents than he did to cabdrivers. anyway, 1956, richard norton smith made a comment to adlai stevenson doing something unprecedented in, opening the convention to picking a vice presidential nominee. very few people really know there were two other candidates in contention for that position. hubert humphrey and al gore, sr. seeing as how jack kennedy was out of it, would that ticket have been a little bit better had it have been al gore, sr. or hubert humphrey? also, i guess what i was going to say -- >> let's leave it there. that is a lot of questions. >> certainly, kefauver did not help. i think what richardson about -- richard said about kennedy was exactly correct. the opportunity to be at the convention and to be seen as a vice presidential possibility introduced jack kennedy to the country. i remember a few years later, i saw him a

smith. we are working our way back. campaignto the fall and the issues that are there. is harry truman popular? >> he is not popular at the beginning of the campaign. it is a reversal of what we see now. the president was less popular than his policies. people weren't content with record high employment, but they -- people were perfectly content with record high employment, but they did not attribute it to harry truman. also, global issues were a huge factor here. one of the things that truman has been criticized in retrospect but at the time was widely praised was running a campaign of national unity in which he tried -- first of all, the idea of bipartisan foreign policy is part of thomas e. dewey's political legacy. it is something that began in the 1944 campaign. he supported truman on the airlift to berlin. he supported truman on recognizing the state of israel. at the same time, he wanted to increase the defense budget by $5 billion. there is no doubt he would have been -- he supported the marshall plan, but he would have asked more questions before just turning american tax dollars over
