his name was harry truman. when united states entered the war in 1917, the army was not prepared to fight in an international war. one of the things they were lacking, besides the number of men, was also artillery. world war i was a war of artillery. 60% of the battlefield deaths were caused by artillery, the projectiles that were fired over the battlefield. when the americans went over to france, they primarily used french artillery pieces. one of the major ones was the french 75 millimeter gun. it was advanced for its time and had an incredible recoil system. when the gun was fired, it did not have to be constantly readjusted. when the americans started using these, they used four guns and a battery. a battery was commanded by a captain. one of the captains of the batteries was from independence, missouri, and his name was harry s truman. harry truman went on to become the president of the united states. he said that what he learned during world war i helped him throughout the rest of his career. one of the i

well, it's probably the biggest renovation the white itself since harry truman moved out for more than four 1948 and '52. he had to move out because the on theouse literally was virge of collapse, that is not exaggeration. it was a rickety frame, the in the 1920s the thirdlidge added floor to the building. it was made of steel and the eight was so much it nearly caused the building to collapse in again, 1948. here is how bad was, the trumans gave their daughter margaret a piano, a leg piano actually crashed through the ceiling of the second floor. was just amazing. the trumans were told right of 1948, election you're going to have to leave, mr. president. the street, wn across the street to blair house his e spent the bulk of presidency living there, not in the white house, but blair were there for four and a half years. this is really the biggest appears, since then, that was about 75 years ago. host: we have time for a couple viewers have it on the renovation project or the history of renovations at the house. paul brandos, a great person to ask for the history, somebody who knows it

truman's legacy. as it appeared in 1969. let's look at that. first, we're going to explore to thesue of legacy latin american travels of harry s truman. truman did not appear to neglect latin america during his presidency. united states only six times while he was president. three of these trips, and the only two-state visits truman made during his presidency, were to latin america. the first in early march, 1947, to mexico. the second in september the same year, was to brazil. cubahird trip, he went to very briefly, and only two to guantanamo bay. he also went to the virgin islands. the most important visit was to puerto rico. we will talk about that one. let's see what these visits tell us about the themes of the legacy that president truman was to leave. the first was to mexico city. .ruman kept a diary in 1947, he wrote quite a few entries about his visit to mexico. visit throughthe his diary. we will try to do so. his plane is landing. he writes, "perfect day, my pilot never misses a schedule. step down from the plane, the mexican president comes down the steps from the observation tower at the same time. we meet, i like him at o
