it reminded harry truman, don't forget a swelled head. ot think you are better than the people who elected you because one of these days you will be going back home. harry never, ever lost that concept. he never forgot who he was nor where he was going, and he always was one of us. at the moment, we are in the hairiest room and little white house what we call the rec room -- harry s truman little white house, what we call the rec room. probably one of the most iconic things in the house is this poker table. it was made for the president in our cabinet shop as a gift from the navy in 1949. the president had early been here for four other vacations prior so the president relaxed by playing poker with his closest staff. they played cards from about 7:00 to 11:00 every night. to president truman, this was a teambuilding exercise, all about camaraderie that had nothing to do with winning or losing. two of his staff are still living. one made eight of the 11 trips with the president to key west, and said when they boarded the plane in washington

harry moves all his worldly possessions into the truman home and what we now know of is the truman home. and there they stay. so this is a photo of harry and bess and margaret around may 1928. this was about the time harry was county judge. margaret is about four years old and of course things have changed a little bit. again it is interesting, you can know what harry and bess are doing and trace it through what is going on in their letters. after world war i harry joins the army reserves and so every summer for two weeks he will go out to army reserve camp and that is when the letters to bess start showing up again. of course when he wasn't there, they were together so we don't have the kind of correspondence. but you can trace it, two weeks in july, 1924, 2526. through the rest of the 20s and some of the 30s. it's interesting because he becomes a little bit more affectionate because they are married now. this is a letter written july 8, 1926. images margaret who is about two years old. he says i never wanted to come home so badly in my life as i did last night when the young lady said

yeah, i would say harry truman probably did. i any that certainly there are many people who would argue that fdr was taken in by stalin. i'm not sure i entirely agree with that. but truman had a very clear eyed view of the soviets and it was after all during his presidency that george ten nan wrote the famous telegraph as containment as a good policy to pursue, which we did and which was successful in the, you know, relatively brief period when you look back at it of about 40 years, 44 years. o yeah, i'll say truman. >> let's get a round of applause. you know, think of harry truman. harry truman left the presidency in 1952, '53, with a job approval rating of 22%. one of the worst -- the lowest measure at that particular time. he is now considered one of the best five presidents or ten presidents depending on the list you see. so in retrospect looking at harry truman's presidency, he could have run for reelection in 1952, but chose not to because he was so unpopular. so he wasn't term limited out because it didn't apply to him when they changed the term limit law, but he didn't run because he was so unpopular, but history looks back and sees how did he do, he comes out pretty well. >> did you want to make a point? >> well, you know, ford -- ford, i think, was very unpopular with the press because he pardoned nixon and there was a lot of criticism of ford and he was probably our most athletic president, as i've said, and i remember one time there was all these stories about him tripping and falling or something like that. >> right. >> and ford said, those reporters

harry truman came that it was in such disrepair that major reconstruction had to happen. what was his role in preserving the stone walls? >> president trump, he loved history and he loved symbols in history very much. it may be coming from his masonic background. when they said he was going to demolish it and rebuild it, he said no. he worried about it and worried about it. he went to yale and leaving the outside walls. rebuilding that and the new building inside. he decide that's what would happen. they gutted the house. it's that much space between them. the steel and the walls. the house was rebuilt. no wooden floors much. it didn't have that saggy feeling that it always had that franklin roosevelt loved because he he loved old houses. the president would stay in the president's house. he was very emphatic about that. they needed bulldozers and he came by. they were about to widen the door. take it in. build them back. there was enough space under the wall for a drive way to take him out. he was emphatic. he saved this mystique of the white house. >> how was it preserv
