it's varied in english, and that's what my book is about hartley. partly. there's a kind of three act story. andd of the three acts roughly are that profanity starts out being about religion, then it's about the body. and then it's about slurring groups. that sounds less familiar but i will explain where it all begins is why w we call cursing sweari. why this one has to do with cursing and that's because the whole issue of profanity used to be whether you were swearing to god or to jesus. if you were deeply affected by something in an emotional way. what was wrong was to swear to god or jesus about something trivial like it being a rainy day or not liking your breakfast. you didn't want to swear in vain. that's what this means. so the way that you curse so to speak is that you would swear in vain and so we are talking about a very early society where life is in the linguistic sense oral and something done by a small elite. if you are going to attest to something you're not going to find it because you can't write and nobody can read so you have to do these
