. >> here's harvey leonard. harv: despite of only limited sun, boston did hit 61 degrees today. it won't be that warm tomorrow and we have had a few little rain. now the latest little area stretches from springfield just about eastward, just about getting to around west end and approaching newton and sliding in closer to boston. it won't be a lot, maybe just enough to dampen the ground. the steadier rains are way down here where low pressure is developing, but nonetheless, this little area, it's developing a little bit, and then will probably start slying east-southeast. first boston, then south shore or two of steady, light rain. we'll be clear tomorrow morning and chillier by the time we get to tomorrow morning. we're starting to clear out slowly in boston. you can see all the northwest winds. the cold front has come through and now slightly chillier air to the north and west, you see it here and you also see it as we widen out into southern canada. that gets a chance to move in overnight. tomorrow morning starting out in the upper 30s in 30 to 32 in the suburbs, so there will

harvey leonard and our winter weather guru break down the winter forecast. >> i think if there is an area that gets heavier snow, this weather will be in the northeast. will happen within the next few weeks. >> he is the director of seasonal forecasting at atmospheric and environmental research. this map predicts a challenging winter. >> there's a large change between the warm in the cold temperatures suggesting there is a active storm track in the area. harvey:: uses a number of factors that the extreme drought player during the winter. harvey: instead, a big contributor for us, how much snow is covering siberia during october. >> it was a big year. harvey: this is what it looked like on halloween. that area the third-largest measure in the last 40 years. here is why that is important. more snow cover means more cold air can build over siberia, creating this dome of cold, dense air. >> it breaking and that cold air spills out. harvey: you may remember one of those outbreaks next -- last winter setting records on #stay. the temperature plunged two minus nine with the windchill of -36

harvey leonard is tracking the rain and looking at its impact. harv: it's been very heavy in some areas over the last couple of hours. widespread across the region. some areas very heavy like up in northwest new hampshire but also around worcester to brockton. some bands. here's a closer look. you can see southern new hampshire getting socked but here's the second band as well. we take a closer look. from manchester, new hampshire, all the way down to nashua, peterborough, all ge at this time making travel pretty difficult with reduced visibility and ponding. also moderate to heavy rain, on down to north redding and worcester all the way eastward through marlboro and westborough down to norwood across the scituate and some elements of heavy rain around plymouth. there are still a few more down around the careful. this is a dry slot that's going to be lifting northward but that will take a few hours to reach boston. so as we go through the rest of the evening commute here in drizzle. by 10:00 or 11:00, all the activity will lift north at that time
