enjoyed it. >> john harwood.our earnings report puts shares of kansas city southern on the wrong track. that's where we begin tonight's "market focus." the railroad company said earnings and revenue were hurt partially by a depreciation of the mexican peso. the company operates rails in mexico. shares were off more than 10% to 87.37. honeywell international's earnings beat wall street expectations but sales were a different story. the conglomerate said revenue fell 5%, hit by a stronger dollar and weaker demand for oil and gas equipment. the company also cut its full-year revenue forecast. honeywell shares fell 1 1/2% to 97.03. suntrust banks beat earnings targets on an adjusted basis. the company was helped by an edge up in its loan business while kesping costs in check. the street liked the news, sending shares up 1% to $40.01. >> the industrial supply company ww granger cut its full-year forecast as its earnings fell nearly 20% in its third quarter. granger said its results reflect a challenging industrial eco

harwood. we won't talk hair, john.t what your expectations are, of course, from what we're going to see this evening. >> i think the extraordinary amount of fluidity in this race means the debates will be unpredictable and interesting for viewers. because you have turbulence in the outsider lane, ben carson pulled ahead of donald trump in iowa. we've seen that's annoyed trump. caused him to change the way he talks about carson and two iowa voters. then you also got the traditional establishment lane with people like jeb bush who we once thought would dominate this race, struggling to keep a place in the race. same is true of chris christie, john kasich, marco rubio is playing a bit more patient game. so it ted cruz. ted cruz hopes to be the beneficiary if the outsider candidates like carson and cruz fall away. all of that means a lot of churn on the stage what we'll try do is capitalize on that to get people to really lay out and contrast with each other their plans for the economy, what they'll do to make everybody in

let's get to john harwood with the latest. not only is this a big development, i guess it's even more surprising given that a couple of hours earlier today didn't mccarthy talk about this? >> well, look, kevin mccarthy has been running ever since john boehner made the announcement. you talk about a couple hours. five minutes before he pulled out of the race i said on cnbc he was very likely to be the speaker. i was shocked by this, and i think pretty much everyone was shocked by this. he determined, especially after he got blowback for his statement about the benghazi committee when he seemed on fox to associate the purpose of the benghazi committee with driving down hillary clinton's poll numbers, hillary clinton attacked, members said, oh, kevin mccarthy can't speak very effectively and communicate effectively. that spurred more opposition to him, but when he got into that caucus today, he announced that he determined he couldn't get the 218 you need to become speaker, and he was pulling out. but it shows you, brian, that th
