maybe it will be an entertainment tie-in, one that boy-toy giant hasbro is banking on. those are toys spun from upcoming movies like spiderman, g.i. joe and even hasbro's popular battleship game. >> with the amount of entertainment that kids consume on all screens-- not just television, but on mobile devices, on their laptops, and on desktops-- entertainment programming is clearly a driver in our business. it's not the only driver, but it's a powerful driver. >> reporter: as you can imagine, toy sales are fairly resilient. after all, who doesn't love to play? but analysts are predicting a flat-to-slightly-up year for sales this year as more kids are being distracted by things other than toys. >> increasingly it's difficult to compete with free, when there are games online, or activities online, or virtual world's online that you can get involved with initially at least for free. that takes up a lot of that available mindshare for what kids can do. >> reporter: which is why many toymakers this year are creating app-cessories or app-tivities. they allow tech-savvy kids (a

certainly the stock has done quite well, as has hasbro's. >> we feel very good about the condition ofess right now. we had a very good year as an industry last year, despite a lot of pressure from the economies. overall the toy industry was roughly flat but we feel good about that because the industry is about 5% larger than it was before the economic crisis, despite the fact that commodity costs that affect all of us in the industry are about 30% so we think that speaks to a lot of the innovation in the industry, our share group so we feel good about where we're positioned and where the industry is. >> is there a one or two toy that's driving the business right now? >> no, really we're very fortunate we have a broad portfolio of brands and broad portfolio of countries, in 2011 great performance across all countries and brands. we have our core brands, barbie, hot wheels, fisher-price, american girl. now thomas and friends. those core businesses will continue to be important to us. we also have new launches with things like monster high, which has become a huge global success for us.

we hear from hasbro and mattel particularly.rope is lower than what toy makers like to see for that next generation of consumers. that's a worry. we've got increasing input prices which i know we're going to detail a bit more in a moment or so. that's causing some of these companies to have to raise some prices which could be a little tough for some consumers as they make those purchasing decisions. but there's some to international, very strong for the toy makers. dolls also two product categories selling well. >> you sort of answered my question there. a lot of companies and industries are facing higher costs now which squeezes margins. is the feeling they have enough pricing power to raise prices? >> they're hoping so. but hasbro cfo said on that company's conference call he's concerned about what he called tremendous volatility and resin prices, transportation costs as well. toys have long lead times. 18 months. there's a lot of planning and a lot that can happen from that time, the product inception to the time it comes on
