. >> for the first time in half a century havana bay is getting a facelift. they are making way for a new pedestrian walkway. they are also putting the finishing touches on what would be the largest bar in cuba, complete with its own microbrewery. this bar and restaurant complex is housed in a former tobacco warehouse on a disused key sticking out into havana bay. next door recently converted houses home to the arts and crafts market. it is all part of a waterfront regeneration or object. >> it's all going to be commercial. it will be a tourist port like others around the world such as barcelona or new york. >> havana bay is a natural sheltered harbor which for centuries has served as the main port, but the channel which connected to the sea is too shallow for today's large cargo vessels, so the existing facilities will soon be replaced i is $600 million deep water port nearing completion along the coast. once the new port facility is operational, the plan is to gradually start moving all the ordered -- all the old facilities and industrial complexes out of h

the citizens of havana come out in force to welcome their liberators. a new day has dawned for all. >> the revolution was an idea, a very beautiful idea to change everything, to go against these dictators, to have a very democratic thing, and to have a real, honest government. one day, it was the-- absolutely the beginning of the revolution, fidel castro arrived to the country club, to which he didn't belong at all and with che guevara, and they decided to play golf. the country club was the most aristocratic club in havana, so all the old members that were playing golf were horrified. and suddenly, fidel castro said to che guevara, "imagine, che, if we could put hundreds of students of art in this magnificent landscape."

they met in havana, moved to rio and eventually new york city where charles was born in 1950. when he was 5 the krauthammers moved to montreal. they spent summers at the family cottage in long beach, new york. charles recalls spending every day with his brother on the field, on the court or in the water. >> i don't think i ownershiped a shirt until i was 21. all the pictures, family movies, my father is shirtless, my brother, i am. we are outside in the sun. i read on the beach. that's where i got all my knowledge was reading. >> reporter: of course there was reading and studying. his father spoke nine languages and carried his son's stellar second grade report card around in his pocket. >> he said, i want you to know ifrg. i want you to learn everything. you don't have to do everything. you have to know everything. that was part of life. >> reporter: that life didn't include a tv. >> my father wouldn't allow it. once a week, sunday night we'd go to the neighbors to watch "the ed sullivan show." that was the one concession to television. >> reporter: inspired by uncles who wer

weapon designed specifically to be used by anti-castro guerrillas for urban warfare in a place like havana, and how it evolved into essentially a mass-market consumer product that became the weapon of choice for gun gangs -- for drug gangs, and so forth, in baltimore and other cities. i had been living in baltimore at the time. one stop along the way. i had been living in baltimore at the time, and the thing i was struck by, reading about -- this was in the '80s, late '80s, reading about all of these drive-by shootings, was, wait a minute. where does a 13-year-old kid get a weapon? where's he get a weapon like this? so i essentially traced kind of -- what i like to refer to as the forces, the cultural and institutional forces that conspire to put one example of this gun into the hands of a kid in virginia beach, virginia, who used it to kill a teacher, and trace all the forces that contributed to that -- the gun culture, gun laws, the nra, and so forth. it was very good, i think. c-span: and "isaac storm" came out what year? >> guest: that would have been '98, something like that. c-span:
