welcome to hawaii. enjoy. see you. today, hawaii is at the center of air routes spanning the pacific. it's as near to japan as it is to many parts of america. now over seven million tourists visit these islands every year. our desire to travel has created one of the world's biggest industries. tourism connects parts of the globe that many people, even 30 years ago, could only dream about. [man singing in hawaiian] [man] ♪ everybody loves the huki lau ♪ ♪ where the lau lau is a kau kau ♪ ♪ and a big luau... as the world shrinks in time, if not in distance, the faraway and exotic are becoming increasingly familiar. the hawaiian dream, the land of hula dancers and steel guitars, exotic but safe, is a recipe that many other tourist destinations have tried to emulate. here at waikiki beach, the focus of hawaii's mass tourism, tourism has become big business. we're in hawaii. well, hawaii is not really a state, and things like that, and it's. like that since i can remember, back in 1959, and i guess you heard that -- >> well, i watched, i think those shows jack carr did in hawaii, right after statehood, and he does ask this crowd of people what do you think of the united states, and they all yelled back, you're in it, you know? [laughter] i think some of that dislocation and i think some of that is just a byproduct of what happens when, you know, one country on a continent, you know, colonizing an island thousands of miles from its shore. in some ways, yeah, in some ways it's a completely american place to me just because it's so mill tar risic -- militarized with training bases everywhere and it's religious and a lot of crummy commercial architecture which is a bit of a specialty in this country. there are so many things about it. i mean, especially and then you have all those hotels and resorts. with the hotels and the resorts and the military bases, there's a writer i like who once wrote that the two great contributions

he was born in hawaii. they lived together in hawaii until 1967 when she had married her second husband, and she then picked up her son because she was sent back to indonesia, so then they lived in jacardo together. for the first ten years, he was with her the whole time. then she made a decision with the desire to get him a better education than she could in indonesia with the belief he needed an english language education to have the opportunity to go to a great university, she sent him back to hawaii by himself at age 10 or maybe 9 plus on a plane to live with his grandparents and go to the school he ultimately graduated from, and she was, as i said, married at the time to an indonesian and she stayed in indonesia initially, went back to christmas to be with young barak and joined him the following spring and lived with him through middle school. there was a period of distance, then she was back with him, and then in 1975 when he was in 8th grade getting close to getting to high school, she finished her

why hawaii? >> i fell in love with a woman who lives in hawaii. enough's said. >> our president came from hawaii. this is an archipelago, not one island. each island has its own identity. it also has an indigenous culture. there are people who have lived in hawaii for 1500 years and they have a culture and language, a real language. i cannot say anything bad about it. it is far. when a places far away and hard to get to, it sometimes retains its identity. tavis: last time you were on the program we broached the subject. to your earlier point, it is true that books allow us to travel all around the world. the internet, for that matter, allows us to travel around the world without leaving the comfort of our home or office. the downside is that most americans, as you well know, do not own a passport. they do not own a passport. i happen to be going to china in just a few days. after my first experience there, i wanted many of the people that work with me to experience china. china is growing, this is burgeoning, they have their own issues. if we are

han due -- -- from hawaii, the -- the gentlelady from hawaii, ms. hanabusa, and a member oppose each will control five minutes. ms. hanabusa: the amendment i propose is a simple amendment. title 43, section 1340, entitled geological and geophysical explorations is what is the subject of h r. 1229. specifically, subsection d entitled drilling permits. under that subsection, the secretary -- it states the secretary offer us an approved exploration plan to drilling any well in accordance with such plan. what the amendments are proposing here today and what my amendment is addresses is what is set forth as page four and i propose that it amends after line 6 and includes a subsection three, which addresses the worst case discharge scenario certification this amendment requires the secretary shall not issue a permit without certifying that the applicant first has calculated a worst case discharge scenario for the proposed drilling operations and b has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the secretary that the applicant possesses the capability and technol
