you were born and raised in hawaii. what took you from hawaii to the main land first? what was your first trip back to the main land? >> you know, that was probably when i was five years old to go to disneyland in california. a lot of people travel to california from hawaii and many people still go to disneyland. that was probably my first trip but you know, i started swimming when my family was living, we were living in guam. >> competitively? >> competitively. so swimming brought me to the main land probably twice a year. >> was your dad in the military? >> my dad worked for the federal government. so he, we got stationed and we were treated just like military for about three years from fifth grade to 7th grade. i lived in guam. >> earlier on you mentioned senator inouye. you brought a picture along of senator inouye. >> this picture is in my office. came by way the inouye legacy fund and my parents bought it at a democratic auction. >> tell us about the people in the picture. >> okay. so far left is senator inouye. in the middle is patty mink, a congresswoman from h

hawaii was a plantation society. it was a very hierarchical society with whites on top and labor on bottom. originally native hawaiians but the plantation society imported workers from asia, from puerto rico, from portugal, it was a very stratified society. the republicans dominated the economic life, the political life, the social life. patsy was part of this generation that tried to organize democrats and they really reached out to people who were the have not sos they reached out to workers, they reach out to people who were nonwhite and built a democratic party that still is now the dominant political voice in hawaii. but at the time she was recently graduated law j.d.. she was also a young woman with a child and nobody would employ her. she ended up as a libyan in chicago. when she came back to hawaii there was racial and gender discrimination so she hung up her shingles and her clients were relatively poor so her first case she received fish for payment. as she was trying to make a space for herself as a profes

they never could get the treaty through for the annexation of hawaii. it ended up being a joint resolution, a war measure that because of the philippines that hawaii was so important to hold the philippines and get to the markets in china, that's really the only reason we ended up with hawaii. saul jump ahead a little bit to the spanish-american war, the idea was that we were going to free the cubans and then we were going to free the philippines. john hay was all for it but so was sam clements. sam clements, when the spanish-american war first happened, he was very excited about this war. it was the war unlike any other. it was a war we were fighting and spending blood and treasure to free another people. at one point he was so excited about this, he would join up the fight himself if it weren't for the danger. that changed over time as it became clear that it wasn't about free in the cubans and freeing the philippines but we were about controlling those places. hay was the guy who had to basically execute the plan, the annexation of hawaii and we don'
