what josh hawley is doing is very different. donald trump continues to insist that the election was stolen from him. last night he was rage tweeting deranged attacks on republican officials in georgia who won't steal the election for him, including a claim that the secretary of state's brother, quote, works for china. it turns out the georgia secretary of state does have a brother, but he has nothing to do with chinese tech companies or voting machines. he's just an ordinary guy. then today seemingly in response to hawley's announcement, trump tweeted january 6th, see you in d.c. on what basis is josh hawley contesting the election on the 6th of january? georgia just finished yet another audit of its results that confirmed once again that biden won and that there was no fraud. trump's crack team has not been able to find evidence of fraud anywhere else. and their legal challenges have been laughed out of the courts again and again. at one point, they lost cases in six states in a single day. and, look, it's one thing for some of

senator hawley's objection could maim a debate on the issue but won't change the outcome.peters of michigan, ranking member of the senate homeland security committee. thanks so much for coming on. let me get your reaction to senator hawley's political stunt. he knows this will go nowhere. i can only imagine what his yale law school professors must be thinking. for millions of voters who fall for this farce, are you worried it could further erode faith in the electoral process? >> absolutely, i'm worried. and you're right. this is a circus. it's really unfortunate that he is going to do this and try to raise questions where there are no facts to back anything up. here in the state of michigan, we saw republican lawsuit after lawsuit. all of them were thrown out of court. there was no evidence whatsoever. those were cases that occurred all across, all over the battleground states as well. you mentioned attorney general barr in homeland security. we had chris krebs who was in charge of cyber security who said this was the most secure election. what we should be doing, we shou

what are the personal ambitions at play here for senator hawley. so, what would he be looking for come 2024, if trump follows through with this thing? >> right. if he follows -- listen, if donald trump doesn't run, all of these folks, like josh hawley, like mike pompeo, maybe even lindsey graham, marco rubio as well, they want to be the next in line and the favorite of donald trump to inherit his base. i think they're wrong in the sense that, if you want to be the republican nominee, or the nominee of any major party, you have to build your own base. it isn't really helpful to be a fanboy of anyone. if you look at donald trump, who was donald trump a fanboy of? nobody, right? maybe putin. that's about it. but this idea that, somehow, they're kind of carrying donald trump's water is going to mean that they are in the front of the line for his base, i think it's just a misunderstanding of his base, why they like donald trump, and just a misunderstanding of presidential politics more broadly. >> all of this happening next week. again, not changing the

he's talking about hawley's ambitions of running for president in 2024, might be part of the reason why he's going to object to the certification of the results next week. what do you make of all of this? >> i heard from moderate republican senator murkowski's office and planning on certifying the results like all the democrats and many republicans will have to make the choice to do as well. her office is saying they're concerned that objecting to these real results, these electoral results will undermine the confidence that americans have and states like alaska have in the electoral college process. we're hearing from these two senators they're not just concerned about what this means for next week, they're concerned about what this means for american democracy and the systems in place. it's important to note that more than 90 judges at the state and federal level rejected challenges, over 50 attempts by president trump and his allies to overturn results in states that have failed through the legal process, and so what we're seeing josh hawley do is likely doomed to fail or going to fa

any words of other senators planning to join the hawley escapade. >> senator hawley himself said yesterday his office had heard from several offices after he announced he was going to object. i think there's been several senator very coy. it's worth talking about what the practical implications are. this will not overturn the election. this will not change the fact that joe biden will be inaugurated as the 46th president on january 20th. what 2 will do is draw out what is usually a fairly pro forma process. when the house goes to count the electors, if it's paired with a house member and senator, then the house and the senate have to recess, and then vote. the vote is the issue that some republicans have a big problems with at there point in time. what i'm being told right now. this actually reflects what senate majority leader mcconnell -- is an objection would force senate republicans to either vote with the president, somebody who they have all been loyal to, who commands such brazen love in the republican base or vote for reality. that is that joe biden won the election. while that doe

so explain how this and what senator josh hawley is doing?here's no comparison to what we did in '05. number one, john kerry had conceded the race. we have a president here who's orchestrating kind of an overthrow of the election. secondly, we said upfront we have no interest -- we said upfront we have no interest in overturning the election. all we wanted was to focus on voter suppression that we saw in ohio. she came to me on on behalf of members of the black caucus. she showed me photographs of african-american voters standing in line in the rain with children in their hands some of them in their arms, for up to nine hours. we found out there were only two voting machines in some of these precincts whereas in the white areas there were 20. so all we said was we wanted to take an hour of the senate's time, she took an hour of the house time, said upfront it was nothing to do with overturning the election. we didn't want to get any other votes we just wanted to focus on what we called electoral justice. after that was over, not that i was po

josh hawley has avoided that problem. mitch mcconnell has got a big problem because the president is going after him just as he's going after brian kemp, the governor of georgia. he set up a situation where he's injected a late demand for $2,000 checks to make mitch mcconnell look like the bad guy standing in the way of these $2,000 checks. that's precisely the argument that the democratic senate candidates want to advance before that runoff. if they win, mitch mcconnell is going to lose his job as majority leader. donald trump, however, is certain to lose his job as president because we all know states have certified the electoral college results. joe biden got 306 electoral votes, 36 more than you need to become president. there's simply no prospect that the supreme court, which is like other courts, have thrown these challenges out, or that republicans in the congress are actually going to effectively overturn these results. there will be a debate, a vote. hawley and the house members have assured that. it's not going
