here we are at the hay festival.re surrounded by people who love stories, authors, readers. we're all passionate about stories. it's a very innate human thing, to want to tell stories, to hear and share stories. what do you think is behind that human need for narrative? i think probably a multiplicity of things. one is stories are the way we tell ourselves who we are, who we are as a nation, a tribe, the human race. but one of the interesting things in stories is the way they allow you to give shape and control to things that are otherwise really messy and don't make sense. and even if the story itself is about awful things, just the shape of it says that there is a kind of order here. and i think we need that, even if it's a lie. there's a reason we use the word "voice" so much to talk about fiction and what makes a great novelist. people mentioned philip roth, and there's a reason we use voice as a metaphor for personal power or agency, for political enfranchisement. this sense that having a voice is somehow intima
