we took this best practice from on hayes will valley. we have people in our neighborhood with their support, care and love are not coming through the door of light. and getting away from their criminal activity. when there's an arrest and there are repeat offenders. we have the officers tell us the arrest number when they arrest the person. then we hand over letters they are called stay away order letters. they are letters from the community, all of us. we are the ones that have to do all of this. that's an important message. we write letters to the judges saying that we would like this person this individual to be not be able to come back in our neighborhood. just because that disconnects them their community as far as the criminal community. the da hands the letters to the judges and the judges read the letters and realize it's a real impact in the community. that way you don't see the person back on the street within 5 or 6 days. if they are doing the same thing or in the area these guys can arrest them right away without probable cau

we also heard from steven hayes today. saying on television, we're not going to hear from him. he has everything to lose. but apparently he wants to die. that is what he told the judge today. >> he did? >> he did. he said, he committed these heinous crimes. he said he was remorseful. he apologized to the family. he said he, you know, that he welcomes death and i think that that was what was most striking about his testimony. he looks different in the courtroom. he's not this heavy set guy anymore. he's very thin. he's lost a lot of weight. he has a beard now. he looked pitiful. >> sunny, then it was the judge's turn. >> it was the judge's turn. usually, tony, in death penalty cases you do hear the judge impose a death sentence. in connecticut it's not a recommendation from the jury. it's a verdict. he was going to have to impose that sentence unless he completely set it aside. usually what you hear is something like, may god have mercy on your soul. that is not what this judge said. he said something like, it gave him no p

some of the things we have done with the da's office stem from hayes valley best practices. but really or philosophy is safety for all. when we want to reach out in our neighborhood we felt like having it safe for your children to be on the streets was vital and important and if the children could be on the streets everybody else could safely. we decided to do things with community events that would involve children and all the children. like safe path day where the first day of school we tell the neighborhood come and stand on the streets while the kids go to school in the morning and wish them, have a great school year. get to know them. tell them education's important. we had the merchants and different people donate and healthy snack ands back packs and school supplies we gave to them. we involved the beat officers and they handed out the school supplies and healthy snacks. what we realized was our schools were important in the community. us with our community partners around our neighborhood went into our elementary school and started a pta. there hadn't been a pta ther

i wanted to add in terms of this stay away order project or what hayes valand he lower haight worked on is they had the da's office at their meetings as they have been work on the issue to help deal with the particular situations. so if your da representative is not there ethyl can tell you. okay. so, i would talk to the da because they were instrumental. one other thing about the stay away orders, when they are cest up they can be as specific or general as needs be. if somebody lives very close to where the stay away order is and the stay away order is where he or she was doing business, there can be exceptions and conditions in this that say that this person can go to and from their house. from the bus stop to their house they can't be on the corner of 16th and mission and loitering for the purpose of selling drugs or committing what their crime was but can walk through it to go home. they can take a bus from there if they can't find a place to take a bus. it can be spelled out that specifically so as not to restrict somebody from going to and from their home. >> any other question
