how do you see this playing out, hayes?ink that democrats on the hill and the white house, they think that republicans are going to blink. that they're not going to tank any sort of bill that the debt ceiling is attached to. they think that there's no use actually negotiating over this. i hope that they're right. i really do believe that there's not going to be enough of a hub bub this time around that republicans actively work to kill any legislation that has the debt ceiling raise attached to it. i think there will be a lot of sound and fury over it in the next couple weeks, that they're going to be talking about how this is just trying to pay for the biden spending agenda, even though raising the debt ceiling, i want to point out, is not about new spending. it's making sure america can pay for the things we have already borrowed and spent money on and continue to keep borrowing to pay for those things. so we're going to hear a lot of misinformation from a lot of republicans about what raising the debt ceiling means over

hayes, you're back with me. what do you think is the biggest hurdle that democrats are facing right now? is it republicans, hayes? or is it the disagreements within the party? >> right now, i mean, it's disagreements within the party because even if you do kill off the filibuster, i mean, the filibuster's not really on the table right now for once. it's a budget reconciliation bill. they can pass this with just 50 votes plus a tiebreaker from vice president harris. it's all intraparty for a change, and so the biggest roadblock is making sure that all of the moderates get on board with the progressives, and honestly, i think that it's fascinating that the progressives, they have been assisting and are correct in insisting that they're the ones who have biden's back. they're the ones who want to maximize what the biden white house has been asking for in the build back better plan. they're the ones who want to juice up the amount that is being spent and not really just spent, invested. to use that term again. this

i'm chris hayes. as of today, roe versus wade is essentially dead in the state of texas, the second largest state in the union. the right to abortion, as recognized by the supreme court in 1973 with decades of precedent reviewed over and over decades of jurisprudence. that right is effectively gone in our state of the union. it did not go into the 6-3 court with fanfare and coverage, instead it came with just total absence, silence, as the court failed to rule on a request to block the new law passed by texas republicans and signed by governor greg abbott. that law, senate bill 8, went into effect today, banning all abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. it also, and this is key, allows private citizens to sue abortion providers and anyone else who helps a woman obtain an abortion, including those who give a woman a ride to a clinic or provide financial assistance in obtaining an abortion. now, the law is obviously unconstitutional under the court's current jurisprudence. it goes against all th

hayes want to exercise his constitutional jury trial. he was told that the prosecutor would amend the charge to add the kentucky habitual criminal act. he had two other charges from forgery and theft and he would be deemed a habitual offender and get a mandatory sentence of life. the prosecutor said it was his call. if you plead guilty, you get five years. if you exercise your jury trial and get convicted, you'll get a mandatory life. i cannot imagine it too much more coercive than this. it is teed up pretty well for the supreme court to recognize how it is going. in a 5 -- four decision the court refused to say was unconstitutional. the court said, the sentence can but -- advised by competent counsel -- is unlikely to be given to's false condemnation. the idea is that competent counsel has a thin do with the coercive aspect of this. my favorite quote said, the presence of counsel has little redlands to the voluntariness of a guilty plea entered at gunpoint is no less voluntary because counsel can explain how the gun works. next to the c
