we took this best practice from on hayes will valley. we have people in our neighborhood with their support, care and love are not coming through the door of light. and getting away from their criminal activity. when there's an arrest and there are repeat offenders. we have the officers tell us the arrest number when they arrest the person. then we hand over letters they are called stay away order letters. they are letters from the community, all of us. we are the ones that have to do all of this. that's an important message. we write letters to the judges saying that we would like this person this individual to be not be able to come back in our neighborhood. just because that disconnects them their community as far as the criminal community. the da hands the letters to the judges and the judges read the letters and realize it's a real impact in the community. that way you don't see the person back on the street within 5 or 6 days. if they are doing the same thing or in the area these guys can arrest them right away without probable cau

some of the things we have done with the da's office stem from hayes valley best practices. but really or philosophy is safety for all. when we want to reach out in our neighborhood we felt like having it safe for your children to be on the streets was vital and important and if the children could be on the streets everybody else could safely. we decided to do things with community events that would involve children and all the children. like safe path day where the first day of school we tell the neighborhood come and stand on the streets while the kids go to school in the morning and wish them, have a great school year. get to know them. tell them education's important. we had the merchants and different people donate and healthy snack ands back packs and school supplies we gave to them. we involved the beat officers and they handed out the school supplies and healthy snacks. what we realized was our schools were important in the community. us with our community partners around our neighborhood went into our elementary school and started a pta. there hadn't been a pta ther

ago, we had a presentation that was brought to was for alternative uses on the parcels, and the hayes valley farm and other projects were represented. all of them were very, very enthusiastically received at the first meeting, and as you can well imagine, the first two that have come have been a great boon to the neighborhood. we stayed in touch with doug and followed his progress as well as the most complicated in some ways. it has attracted incredible of enthusiasm and interest in the neighborhood. so we're here to very, very enthusiastically support, you know, we just feel it is consistent with everything we stand for, using the land, being creative, embracing newness, so we are really excited to have this. as douglas mentioned, he has been to us three times now, and he has given us all of the updates. the timing of this is especially good. and as you know, this is finally coming to pass, as well. this is for the engagement of the alley, and in closing, we have a letter we want to read to you from the association. dear supervisors. we are offering our complete support of this project. the

i went to community meetings in the mission and hayes valley and even though i couldn't get my neighborhood rolling as fast as i wanted to and i'm an impatient person i went to the other community groups that were already organized and the movers and the shakers and i got involved with them and said what can i take here? i started small like what could we do that would be positive that would get people excited. i did this event for safe pass on the streets with the kids. i thought, may be i will write a grant for mayor's office of we decide of community criminal justice. and we got it. and we were like. oh , we get to educate the community members. i thought. how about the challenge grant. we got it. you have to toss in the deep end and swim. you have to do that and set our goals then and be realistic. it hasn't been easy. we have a web server. that was a big one. when we did the neighborhood cleanups and events we got web server. now anything that happens there are one or 2 on the block part of the web server you set it up on google group. say a couple of people are on that when we have an

i'm the nert coordinator for hay hayes valley. before i start off on my rant i wanted to acknowledge most of what i will talk about was built and developed with a neighboring coordinator in the lower hate who was at the morning session but not here today. anything i say give her equal credit for what works and doesn't work. so i'm going to start from the assumption that you have some training or you will begin out reach in your neighborhood. for us where that started was at a basis of 0. there was no active coordinator in the neighborhood at the time. we decided to take it on. so our first priority was justifying a way of getting the information out. how do we connect with people in the neighborhood? where are the places we can go? what are the resources that already exist? we started with the farmers market. getting a free table from the guy who organized it and giving out information. that lead to other connections you meet people from log organizations and faith based and community groups all the different organizations whateve
