hayley: it has been so warm today. stephanie: middle and high school students from new hampshire and vermont came together in concord today for the annual state vex robotics competition. adam: the day-long competition took place at new hampshire technical institute. teams battled each other using the robots they created. rounds and ended the day with qualifying rounds. >> it teaches them about mechanical, a little bit about electricity, electronics and programming. these robots usually have mechanical components, sensors, electric motors, and they all tie together. adam: the winning teams from today' s competition will go to the world championships. stephanie: lack of snow is forcing the tamworth sled dog race to cancel. the race was scheduled for next weekend, but the tamworth outing club and new england sled dog club say there' s not enough snow cover on trails and the lake for races. the clubs already postponed the race in january because of warm weather, and now they say they' re forced to cancel. what a shame. you

let' s check in with meteorologist hayley lapoint. hayley: we had the bright, blue sky perfect for outdoor activities. i was able to enjoy a walk outside and not be so cold. today was a typical february day. we got to 40 degrees in concord, plot or degrees above the average of 36 for this time in late february. 39 was the height manchester. that is almost where we stand now. 38 in concord. most of us in the mid to upper 30' s. a few places have fallen into the lower 30' s north. there are clouds starting to stream in. in northern portions of new york state and vermont, there are snow showers moving through montreal. those snow showers will traverse across northern areas of new hampshire tonight with like snow accumulation -- with light snow accumulation. if you' re heading out to dinner or a movie this evening, nothing to get in your way other than a cool breeze. 30 degrees at 9:00 this evening. by 11:00, we will have fallen into the 20' s. forecast in a few minutes. stephanie: thanks so much. the cannon mountain tramway is back in ac

hayley: good evening, everyone. here is a live look in claremont, drive payment -- pavement after a dry day. you can see a bit of the sky. the clouds are trying to break apart. that will happen overnight as the skies will clear out. you will have a brighter day tomorrow. temperatures will be cooler. we have been treated to a spring type weekend with temperatures quite mild. 49 was the high in concord. 50 in manchester and nashua. 52 in portsmouth. makes. last weekend on this day, valentine' temperatures in the single compare that today to temperatures in the upper 40' s and 50' s. it was easy a 40-50 degree difference across the state. that just goes to show how wild this winter has been with ups and downs with temperatures. it has been so mild overall and continues to be as we look forward. here are the temperatures now. we have fallen into the 40' s across the state, even 30' s in laconia, plymouth, lower 30' s in whitefield and berlin. the winds have been coming out of the northwest today. that means cooler air i

hayley: skiers aren' t saying that. it' s actually going to be quite mild as we push through the work look at these temperatures. 58 degrees in nashua. salem, 57. 56 in wilton. portsmouth, exeter, 55 degrees. well above the average of 32 degrees. the high temperature in concord was 52. 59 degrees, the record set in 1913. here are the temperatures right now. look at these mild temperatures at 11:30 at night. 54 degrees in nashua. it is in the lower 30' s as you get to the northern part of the state. the winds are coming right out of the southwest. you can see a light breeze at the airport in manchester. is bringing up the warmer air, keeping it surging in. we do have a few scattered rain showers mostly north of the notches. some of this may not be hitting the ground, but across the state, you see this light gray color. those are the clouds overhead and how it will remain for much of the overnight. temperatures won' t really cool down all that much. here is the big system on its way for tomorrow. unfortunately for the sno

hayley: it was beautiful for some of us today. up north, clouds and rain showers and snow showers moved through. the clouds have returned after a hiatus midday. it was beautiful in much of we got some sunshine and temperatures warmed up. we will have rain showers moving across the state. already that is the case. where it is still clear and southeastern new hampshire, the will likely be increased clouds through the evening and maybe a few sprinkles. it is all green on radar because temperatures have been so warm today. it is sticking around. anything that comes over us has been in the form of rain. in northern new hampshire and the higher elevations, we are spotting a couple of areas where there is pink and white on radar. that is indicating at the higher elevations there could be snow or sleet falling. when you get into conway into berlin, it is certainly rain showers falling at the moment. it is light to moderate rainfall at this time from concord into laconia. light to moderate rainfall. rain has not reached manchester or areas

announcer: now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your stormwatch 9 forecast. hayley: good evening. it was one of the coldest days in a long time. temperatures are already subzero in a few communities. in the north country, that is looking toward cannon mountain. it is two below already. at least we had bright sunshine. it was a cold start. these were some of the coldest readings i could find across the state. this is the actual air temperature, neglecting the wind. 25 below in franconia. 20 below in littleton. new london got to 19 degrees below zero. remember with the wind, it felt more like 40 below in a lot of those spots. here were the high temperatures today. we only reached 10 in manchester, only eight in concord, zero in whitefield and berlin. compare that to the high we typically have this time in february of 35, and obviously this was cold stuff. here is where we stand now. single digits across much of the state and even some areas below zero up north. the good thing is the winds have started to diminish. we are not seeing guests upwards of 30 and 40 miles per hour like 13

for more on the cold stats for hayley lapoint the windham. hayley: yes, i can tell you first hand, it definitely feels really chilly. over the past couple of minutes even and there have been a couple of wind gusts that almost take your breath away. you can feel the arctic cold almost setting in here. so i want to talk a little about this cold. in concord, as mike mentioned, we haven't gone below zero yet so far this season. north. but it's been over 340 days since we've gone below zero in concord and much of southern new hampshire. the last time, march 7th of 2015. so we wanted to give you an idea of just how cold it's going to feel. look at this computer model, this is forecasting the wind chills, so the temperature with the wind. and over the weekend once we get to about saturday afternoon, saturday night, it's going to feel like 20, maybe even 30 degrees below zero. that's dangerous cold. take a look at some of these tips and things to keep in mine. yes, can you go skiing, yes, you but cover up your skin. give yourself plenty of layers. ke

hayley poland: "it's really beneficial for the students. they're being able to use what they learned in the classroom and how we teach them on a daily basis, they can use on the test". the new sat will include a 65 minute reading section. and a 55 minute math section. the essay is twice as long, but optional. and the scoring will go back to the 1600 scale, with points awarded for correct answers not deductions for wrong answers. hayley: they are encouraging students to guess and if they don't know they can take a guess and potentially get it right. there's no penalty for wrong answers. kaplan test prep suggests looking for areas on the test with the most opporutnity. kaplan test prep: for instance there's trig on the new sat but if you haven't had trig and your'e not gonna get trig before your test about that. worry about the algebra because there's a lot more of that. and you still can take it more than once. mckinzie thomas/junior:i plan on taking a practice test over and over again to see if i can get a higher score. i might take it twice. taisha steele: you can never take the sat

hayley: we're looking at some very cold temperatures over the next couple of days or so. i wanted to give you an update on the ice conditions. i'm standing by a pond, where if you look in the far distance there's still open water. so new hampshire fish and game are sending out words of caution, if do you have plans to head out on the ice this weekend. here are some pictures that they sent to us from earlier this week, they were out testing the waters all around the state. and checking with awgers and ice sticks. they're saying that it's not safe on any pond or lake to drive a car or truck on it at they are also saying you need about six inches to walk on the ice and a good eight to 10 inches if you decide to put a snowmobile on the ice. if you do happen to fall through the ice, they say don't panic, i know that's easier said than done, but you want to get over to where the ice was thicker right before you fell in, give it a big bear hug, throw your arms on top of the ice and kick as hard as can you to bring yourself up onto the ice, then they say to roll away from the hol

hayley: the problem is we've had so many warm bouts of abnormally warm air, we had that earlier this week, then a storm came along at the same time and gave us rain instead of snow. let me show you the latest numbers now. we collect data in concord, that's where we get most of our records and most of our historical data from. so this is for concord, of course it could be different across the state, but so far in year 23.4-inch eggs of snow. compare that to the average for this date, and typically we last year at this time we had difference. let me show you the top five least snowiest years. the number one years, 1979 to 1980, that was the winter that we had 27 inches of snow. if the winter ended today, that 25.4 inches we have in concord would easily put us at the number one least snowiest year ever in new hampshire. still, though, we can get up to 27 inches from one lone storm. so we still have some time, but it doesn't look like at least in the long term that that's going to happen, certainly not the next seven days, a few smaller storms in the forecast. mike will have more on the
