we want to head out live to meteorologist hayley lapoint. she continues our storm watch team coverage from nashua. good afternoon, hayley. how is it looking out there? hayley: good afternoon, kevin. the roads are getting better but it is kind of this globby snow. when i was in the station as this cookie dough consistency. here in a nashua been having these ice crystals, and that forms when you have a layer of atmosphere above our heads for snow. you get this transitioning as through this warmer air mass. and then it gets to the ground re-freezes again. looks like down here in a nashua we have a good intro to of this wet snow and the people have been taking their time on the roadways. we got this video earlier. i like people are just taking the time and heating the warnings and it is good this is a holiday week. a lot less people on the roads. in terms of how much of snow we have down here in nashville, and ensure to and you can still see the grass coming through. not a heavy dumping of snow but regardless of the amount, the precipitation goin

right to rise usa is responsible >> now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your forecast. hayley: here is how it looked today in conway. you can see the beautiful white white. there is some snow on top of mount washington. they got eight inches. before that, it was bare, very unusual for this time in december. given how warm it was, i' m sure you. we had temperatures closer to the average high. we had a bright, sunny day. the clouds starting to stream where it is clear, the temperatures have begun to dip. up north, some of you already in the teens. it is going to be chilly until the clouds fill in overnight. that will limit how cold we get. the central u.s., all of the eastern u.s., lots of cloud cover but not much precipitation. just a few rain showers in iowa, wisconsin. snow showers north of the border. there are a couple of weak systems moving through. for us, that will mean increased cloud cover. along with those clouds, some very mild air again. look at the temperatures at the moment. 28 in concord. 27 in laconia. 25 in plymouth. berlin already 17. 36 in manchester. 3

hayley lapoint is out in salem right now to provide some answers for us. haley: you have to imagine the atmosphere is having lots of different layers. it' s not just what we experience down here, it is all the way up into the sky. this was the big difference today, even at the surface temperatures were well below freezing. s. warmer. as the rain or snow is falling out of the clouds, it sometimes will melt a little bit and then re-freeze on its way down as we get closer to the ground where it is colder. in other instances we have cold air all the way through that that' s why we would have snow up and down from the clouds to the ground. today a lot of us had warmer air in the upper part of the atmosphere and that' s why we had issues with mixing going on. back here live in salem you can see what the result was at this mixing. huge clumps of eyes ice. that' s the latest from salem. back to you, josh. josh: there is still snow falling in the northern part of the state. southern new hampshire, it has seemingly ended with there is still missed and freezing drizz

hayley lapoint tells us how close we are to breaking a record. hayley: we're about nine days away from breaking the top five latest snowfalls across the state. this is mainly from the concord area, these numbers here. up north some of you have had snow on the ground, southern areas that has not been the case. the latest we have ever had snow on the ground was january 13th, 1999. so we still have some time before we go and break a big record like that. i wanted to compare how the rest of the winter went after those so the average for concord in snowfall. you can see there that there was only one year we got above the average when we've had snowfall that late in the year. here. of course last year we had the bulk of our snowfall after january 1st as well. chief meteorologist mike haddad will have more on the forecast coming up in a few moments. josh: commitment 2016 now, the setup is under way for republican presidential candidate donald trump to speak in portsmouth. he'll be at the new england police benevolent association's event where there is a

hayley lapoint is here to tell us what our chances are for some snow before the holiday. maybe just a little? hayley: i wish i had had better news, but it doesn't look good, especially to southern areas of the state with this warm air we've had in place. it's going to be tough. we've had had the precipitation, we've had had the storms coming through, except it's too mild and you get the rain. this is the probability of a white christmas per the different regions, but this is alone. so most of the time if you go up to the north you would think we'd have the snow, 90% chance well, in year that may be the case, but i would put all of these levels much lower, probably closer to zero percent when you get into southern new hampshire by next week. warming trend. the reason for the warm air, it's el nino, the warming of the ocean temperatures in the weather. and this is the outlook for our temperatures over the next couple weeks. really through the end of december, more mild air. we'll get a little cooldown over the weekend, that will be great for the ski areas to make more snow.

than this time yesterday, but are we really headed into winter weather, here's meteorologist hayley lapoint. hayley: not really. i know a lot of you asking me, are we going to have a white christmas, are we going to see snow by then? here's the thing, we may see snow fly over the weekend, just doesn't look like it sticks around, if it sticks to the ground at all. let's not get ahead of happening right now first. it was a good 10, 15 degrees colder today. 38 in concord right now, 39 in manchester. already we've fallen into the upper 20's in berlin. so it's a cold start to what will be chilly overnight. and that is key because there's a storm system out to the west of us that's about to move in and because it's going to arrive at the coldest time of the day, in the morning, in the predawn hours tomorrow, there will be some freezing rain that forms, especially in coos, northern carroll and grafton county. those areas have a freezing rain advisory which goes from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, roadways will be descriply in those northern areas tomorrow. otherwise for the rest of us, here's ho

millions hayley -- meteorologist hayley lapoint is here to explain. hayley: it's all because of el nino, we've got abnormal movement of the storms, the jet stream well to the north of us, but it's dipping over the western parts of the u.s. north of us. the warm air is the big story though, today we had high temperatures again reaching into the 50's in a lot of spots. this is a calendar of the month of december so far and we're running 5.5 degrees above average. we only had one day, the first of the month, where we had had temperatures below the average. rest of the days so far have been at average or well above. of days. in the month is about 39 degrees, that's where we should be today. but look at the temperatures over the next few days. well above that, we're talking 50's for highs, maybe even flirting with 60's over the weekend too in some of the southern communities. hooks like we don't see much of a drop until mid-week next week and certainly no snow in site either. for more on the full forecast, we go over to chief meteorologist mike haddad. mike

josh: let' s go to wmur' s hayley lapoint for a look at the spots with the highest totals. haley: good evening. there were a few areas that got at least a half foot, especially in the higher terrain. pittsburgh got up to about six inches. some communities close to the seacoast had some higher totals as well. we got upwards of five or six inches when you got to some communities. in greenland we had reports of that. here are some of the highest snow totals we saw across the state. some of these were reported this morning so some have higher numbers than these at this point. the biggest problems in terms of collecting the snow data has and freezing drizzle that continues to fall and that can compact the snow accumulation. here in salem as i' m walking around, you can almost hear it because it has that top layer of ice and sleet, it has that little crunch to it. very grainy snow with the sleep that continues to fall. live here in salem we do have a fine mist coming down. walking around the parking area here where it is not treated is incredibly slippery so be careful if you are
