on hbo. what would you like to have people take away from this documentary? you said people don't know the real marion barry. >> well, i'm thinking about 50 years of service that i'm one of the most compassionate, courageous, tenacious, that i'd rather help than hurt. i'd rather serve than be served. and that -- i think the main thing throughout the whole movie is overcoming difficulties, overcoming challenges, and for getting knocked down, as i said, getting up. but also the movie talks about washington, d.c., and the transformation of it. it's parallel, the fact that prior to 1974 we couldn't vote for a mayor, city council, on the school board in '68, run by white southerners who were segregationists who ran our city, and that washington was a sleepy southern town. now washingtonians don't like it when i saw that, but the reality, when i came here in '65, jim, it was -- it was not the metropolis it is now. we didn't have a convention center, didn't have a verizon center, which i helped abe

filmmaker lisa jackson of hbo is here.rful piece of film i think i've ever seen and hard to watch in many ways. for those who have not had the opportunity to see your documentary, can you kind of tell us briefly what you found and what you saw? >> i've been to the congo a half a dozen times since 2006 and i will say that the situation has gotten worse. what i found initially was so many women coming forward to want to tell their stories. it was so unusual for them to have someone who would listen to what they had to say without judgment and with compassion. >> we're talking again litterably hundred of thousands? >> we are talking about hundreds of thousands of women and girls. i met women in their '80s. i met young girls 2 and 3 years old. the one rape hospital i visited was overflowing with women who, the surgeries that are required to repair the injuries that result from these rapes are very elaborate and sometimes they take two to three years to recover. >> angela, i know you wrote a major piece on it. you had a major p

are you still doing work for hbo? >> i was talking about a lot of stuff involving programming as the new regime took over and had to retool and covered was sort of there. it has nothing to do with journalism. the one thing i am not involved with is documentaries. >> the reason i bring up that part of it is because back in 1994, you ask why marion barry? this month there is a documentary on hbo about marion barry. here is what you say. is your father still alive? >> my father is very much still alive. my father is a very interesting story. as i alluded to in that column, he had a family shoe business. it was looted during the riots. unlike many other black businessmen in downtown urban america, he wanted to rebuild and did not want to flee to the suburbs and give up his business. he wanted to -- it was really kind of a heroic feat. it allowed him to be involved. it enabled him to be involved in the campaign for marion barry. to this day, he still volunteers for the organization that tirelessly lobbies to try to get ful

hbo gives us a lot of time to shoot.sometimes 13 days to shoot an episode and most shows have about 8. they really give us time. allows us to do the show really well. this set designers do really great jobs with that. it really makes a difference. i feel that the show is a real cinematic experience. greta: is it completely written by the time you start shooting or is constantly written as you go? >> well, alan ball likes to have everything -- she likes to finish shooting the show way before it comes out. -- he likes to finish shooting the show way before it comes out. this is really so that in case there are problems and their needs to be read shoots, we can do that. those guys are already back in the room breaking times for the third season. they like to be ahead which is not always the case. greta: when do you start shooting the third season? >> i think that we will start shooting in december. we will try to get one in before the new year starts. we had some things happen this year and we were sort of -- we almost did
