hbo, warner bros.tudio, hbo and some of these basic channels which is having a monster year in ratings all the goings-on. it is a really interesting time for this company. you look at companies like netflix and amazon and hulu matter ramping up original programming putting pressure on hbo to maintain its position. >> what does he say about that pressure? regard companies and hehe regard them -- it does think they're doing something fun mentally different from what he was doing hbo? >> i asked him that. how has hbo's strategy changed since netflix got more popular and he sees netflix is a most copying hbo's doing the same thing hbo pioneered decades ago except netflix is doing it over the internet. i think he does have great respect for what netflix has -- if youially with gone netflix is easy to find what show you want to watch and you get recommendations. >> i think he understands that reed hastings has created technology that is really useful especially when you think about the tv industry right now.

how hbo affects netflix, because the whole idea of the subscription business really started with hbo.nd he talks about how the fact that there is so much more content on tv right now, it does not mean that fewer people are watching individual shows, but because of search and the way that you get suggestions online about what to watch, this makes it easier for people to find shows that they want to watch. david: i spoke with jerry smith. he did the interview. david: talk about the big media companies today. he has been with time warner for a long while. guest: he started with them in 1979. and he started with hbo when it was a fledgling channel and he rose through the ranks and he became, he actually led hbo at a time when they launched big hits like the sopranos and sex in the city. since 2008, he has been the ceo of his company. the company he inherited with this massive, media conglomerate. they had aol. time inc. magazine. time warner cable, cable company. he looked at these parts of the company and said they did not really relate to each other and they spun off and what is left is

-- at hbo?st: i asked how the strategy sees netflixnd he almost copying hbo strategy, almost doing the same thing that they pioneered decades ago, except netflix is doing it over the internet. i think that he has respect for what they have done, especially with how, when you go on netflix it is very easy to find what show you want to watch you do get recommendations. david: algorithmically curated and everything like that. guest: yes. and he understands reed hastings and how he has developed technology that is useful. there are more than 400 original shows scripted for tv from last year, so more than we can ever watch. so i think what he is concerned about right now is making an interface so that when you are watching television, it is really easy to find what you are looking for. david: you mentioned more than 400 shows right now, so when you get that media mogul in the room, you need to ask if there is too much content. what does he say? that this iss actually, this is a good thing and what is

emily: usc parodies of hbo, what distinguishes showtime from hbo or netflix?avid: we are all doing very similar things. for better or for worse, the premium, high end area is where everybody wants to go. so what distinguishes a showtime show? i want it to be culturally relevant. homeland has things to say about america's place in the 21st century world. even masters of sex has a lot to say about gender and complicated relationships with sexuality. so, cultural relevance, entertainment value, characters with complicated, adult psychology. emily: some would say that you have all of these hit shows but you haven't had your major, major hit. what is going to be your "game of thrones?" david: i don't think you ever plan for the big hit. we didn't know what homeland was going to be. we are delivering consistent shows that people want to watch. i would love to have a game of thrones. emily: does it keep you up at night? david: no. no. we have a lot of shows. so, you know, we try to figure out how to make each one 10%bigger than it is right now. emily: how do you view

: when at&t launches its upcoming directv now streaming service, consumers will be able to get live hbond espn and other channels on their phones at a fraction of the price of a traditional tv bundle. directv service scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter will have over 100 channels and will work as an app with no set top box or long-term commitment required. the com hasn't announced the cost, but a source says it will be priced in the same range as hulu's upcoming streaming service, expected to start at around $35 a month. time warner's hbo is directv now's second big content deal, earlier this month, announcing the inclusion of all of disney's major networks. >> it's always important to have anchor content and present something that's very consumer-friendly that e consumer finds great value in, so having high-profile content like hbo which obviously has home to all these hits and sports is a really big thing for directv. >> r at&t could bundle directv now with its mobile service to tap into demand, particularly from cord-cutters among it's 130 million wireless customers. the offeri

and hbo over the top, do you think that you'll see hbo get connected in with hulu?'s possible that they could do, you know, some kind of hybrid promotion. it's definitely possible. i'm not sure if they need that right now. we don't actually know of course how many hbo over the top subscribers there are. but it's possible down the road. >> that is not a number we have seen yet in terms of no tt number on hbo. how badly do you want to see that number and where do you think it is relative to the other players right now? >> it's interesting. cbs came out and surprised folks. hbo other the top better have at least a million subscribers. >> one of the other topics we talk about virtually every day here is the saga that is the red stone family and viacom and cbc. and of course every time that conversation comes up, time warner comes up because people think that the natural buyer or combination for a cbs or possibly even a viacom would somehow involve time warner. do you agree? what do you think should happen? >> you know, people talk about consolidation on the content side
