we're in 46 countries, hbo max is in 46 countries in the u.s. market, where we rely for the entirety of 2021 we grew much faster than netflix. to your question of how do i feel about hbo max and into our growth in 2022, i feel very good and i say that most importantly because of the stories you're going to see from us in 2022 i feel great in terms of the product and the technology we've been building and finally, we have a whole lot of geographic expansion that's coming in 2022 as well. and those things are unique to us >> yes, certainly opportunity to expand more internationally. a question about the content spend that's necessary to sustain that kind of growth. you mentioned on the call that 2022 will be a peak spending year but don't you have to keep on investing more and more not just to help add subscribers but to really compete as the likes of net flick and disney+ also ramp up their spending >> when it comes to investments, there's obviously references to bottom line impact, but when you think about the next 10, 20 years in streaming, i d

-- emily: hbo max. richard: hbo had a pretty good 2021. think about domestic subscriber growth, i don't think anybody had more domestic subscriber growth than hbo did last year. the strategy of putting new release movies directly onto hbo max clearly worked, and i think the team at hbo max deserves a lot of credit for doing something that was not easy to do during the pandemic, but i think it worked out well. they don't get a lot of credit for it, but i think it did work out very well. if you are going back to movie theaters this year, i think it will work out well for batman, which comes out in march. the movie theater remains challenged, and that will be a real issue. in terms of hbo content, i think all signs point to casey staying in the new warner burroughs -- warner bros management structure. got a bunch of really exciting content coming up later this year on hbo, so i would not be worried about hbo at all. emily: obviously, as you mentioned, everyone watching their own streaming network. some of those networks go live this year. cnn

hbo max and others had that release window in theaters as well as on streaming. i don't think that the challenge is going to come from one competitor. the netflix concern is specifically that disney is going to have better content. that's highly possible but i think it's a share of onslaught. having so many options, if you took it outside streaming, with increased competition in many respects, it can have cheaper prices and offer goods and services for free it will be challenging for your business. emily: meantime, netflix getting into gaming. a huge driver of future growth. is netflix really prepared to compete there? andre: no, i was one of the first people for years ago who said netflix really needs to get into gaming. it was definitely the right move to do so. the concern is how slowly it's been moving with them being behind. pretty much everything they have been successful at they have had first mover advantage. international distribution. the original is specifically for streaming. you cannot be years behind microsoft and sony and invest less than they are

emily: hbo max has been one of the top downloaded apps. the sex in the city reboot has been a main driver of that. you think original programming -- do you think original program has a leg up because it is hbo? >> i think i would have been more likely to say that a few years ago when they had game of thrones in other titles. hbo has good content, something they do well. hbo max and others have proved you can be successful with having the release window in theaters and on streaming. disney has seen some success with that. i do think the challenge will come from one competitor. netflix's concern is not specifically disney will have better content. i think that is highly possible, but i think it is the sheer onslaught of the consumer having so many options from so even if you took it outside of streaming in any business, if you have increased competition, and that competition in many respects has cheaper prices or offers goods and services for free or more goods and services to the consumer, it will be challenging for your business. emily: me
