heather childers is live in newark new jersey tonight. she says there's chaos inside the airport. >> reporter: good evening. that's not the only place there's chaos. it's out here as well. we can tell you there's good news for travelers heading through this area across the northeast. the three major airports i ncluding here at newark they've started resuming flights that happened earlier this evening, not too long ago. here at newark, la guardia and j.f.k. take a look at the scene out here. this is going on all across the northeast. people digging out, trying to get to where they need to go, a lot of people waited 27 hours, 30 hours and they finally d ecided to go along and it looks like that fellow back there may be stuck for a little while, may not be going far any time soon. it looks like this mess will last for days to come. a power winter storm still p ounding parts of the northeast. heavy snow and strong winds cut power to nearly 40,,000 homes and businesses. and officials at boston's logan airport say some stranded passengers may n

heather childers reports. >> reporter: a monster winter storm is pounding the northeast. up to 20 inches of snow is expected in some areas including philadelphia. that's where the eagles and vikings nfl game was cancelled. a blizzard warning has been issued for new york city. the storm is expected to dump 11-16 inches of snow on the big apple. strong linds will reduce visibility to near zero at times. >> the visibility is a real issue. so if you have to go out today please leave the cars at home and take mass transit. >> and of course many air travelers are having trouble. about 1,000 flights have been cancelled in the new york city area airport alone today. and more are expected. a blizzard warning is also in effect for parts of new england. >> the snow will be wet and heavy. the temperatures will be at or below freezing. and winds will be high. >> reporter: amtrak has cancelled some trains in the area, including its service between boston and new york city. the mid-atlantic region also gets heavy snow. states of emergency have been declared in most of the areas. up to 1
