good evening i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. investigators should know if the remains found are those of a female or male. ktvu's jade hernandez spent the day at the sonol mountains. >> reporter: volunteers gathered to organize a search spread out over the area of half a football field. >> it's a dirt road. it is accessible by vehicle. we took our vehicles down there last night and yesterday. but it's lightly traveled. it does not get a lot of pedestrian traffic or bicycle or horse back traffic. but it certainly is a trail that's used. >> reporter: by mid-afternoon, authorities cleared the area and opened it up. the very spot where the remains were found were no longer hidden. there were sign that is county investigators were out here. we found this bone fragment left behind. what wasn't left behind, the remains taken away yesterday. a volunteer discovered what appeared to be a badly decomposed body without clothes or personal items near by. whether it was a man or woman authorities couldn't tell. it was the second search led by

. >> i'm heather holmes. an eight hourlong standoff between a gunman and deputies came to an end this morning when authorities found the man dead. it started with a domestic disturbance at an apartment on the 4300 block of san pablo road around 7:00. deputies say the man barricade himself inside the unit with his wife and three children, a half hour later he let them go. over the next several hours negotiators tried to convince him to give up and at 3:15 this morning they went in and found the 43-year-old suspect dead inside. his name and cause of death have not been released. >> the police are investigating an accident where a driver was struck and killed standing outside a car. it happened just before 3:00 on westbound interstate 80. it's not clear why the victim stepped outside the car. the two right lanes the freeway were blocked for about two hours while officers investigated. >>> we are getting new information on an arrest in a shooting in east oakland yesterday. police now say they have a possible susp
