heather ishimaru has the story. >> a tarp covers unfinished repairs on the roof of their berkeley homelarge pine tree fell on it in january of last year. they lived in one room of the house with their four young girls until that august when they moved out for vanderbilt construction to begin repairs. they have lived in hotels with family and friends ever since. >> vanderbilt was recommended by farmers. >> but now vanderbilt is bankrupt. chang's work is far from completed and all of the insurance company's $72,000 is gone. farmer's issued three checks made to chang and his mortgage bank, wells fargo. they explained thousand handle the checks. >> the instructions were to endorse them, and then hand them over to the contractor who would know what to do. >> he cashed them at fremont bank. because of the bankruptcy chang has no way to recover the money. chang had back surgery last week, but plans to complete the work himself borrowing from his 401k to pay for it. >> my bank should not have allowed the checks to be cashed. it was cashed by a third party. i feel in the lurch, you know? my ins

heather ishimaru is in the newsroom with the latest. the family dies did get some encouraging news from oh today. >> families of the missing men have been promised the search and rescue operation will go on beyond the standard 7 hours. 76 hours. yi and the mexican embassy say it will go on indefinitely. an embassy spokesman said tonight that mexican and u.s. authorities would continue to evaluate the situation day to day. yi says there is evidence from past boating accidents in the sea of cortez that people can survive past 96 hours. this afternoon the brother of one of the missing recounted what a survivor told him about spotting the waves and warning the rest of the sleeping men. >> he was on the top deck when he heard noise and saw a big wave coming and ran down to the cabin and woke everybody up. by the time everybody came out they were already in nine feet of water. there should be a tremendous chance of opportunity to survive past the 96 hours. that is how we got them to sin continue to search. >> reporter: there is continued conf

heather ishimaru is live at the scene. >> we are at the virginia light rail station on the virginia overpass looking down on the sinkhole which is southbound 87. workers are digging out gravel and loosened material that a backhoe has been working on the last half-hour. this is just on this one side is the shoulder area that is affected. that is southbound guadalupe parkway as it feeds from 101. on the other side it's more hazardous that is 280 feeder and that is in the fast lane where the sinkhole has appeared. as far as dimensions, chp been describing it 30 by 30, by our estimates unless there is something going on underneath the surface, it particular on the fast lane side, 280 feeder. of course, anything involving the fast lane would be a problem no matter what the size of the sinkhole or giant pothole. we don't know from caltrans exactly what their plan is or what might have caused it. it was record at about 3:00 this morning. originally they were targeting noontime for work to be completed and that is not going to be met. now, they are putting it at 3:00 this afternoon, with road work o

heather ishimaru attends the california maritime academy. >> cadets will run the ship when it sets sail in a couple of weeks. >> this is where cadets train at sea. >> the captain will stand watch over a crew made up of college students. >> they learn right hire. they get to experience this at sea. >> the at sea requirement is part of the education at california maritime academy, one of six state owned facilities in the nation. it's a fully accredited facility. students pay the same tuition and learn about everything from driving a super tanker to managing and designing a ported to running the engines below the deck. freshmen will spend a semester living on the ship to get their sea legs. >> it's also a good thing because it gets you exposed. >> it's a throw back when super tankers ruled the san francisco bay andan ruled the longshoremae waterfront. it opened in 1929 and been training people ever since including captain bolton before coming back to teach. >> you must take leadership and responsibility. you must learn how to handle the ship or you are not going to graduate. >> this must f

heather ishimaru explains. >> when the san bruno pipeline exploded last september gas records manager larry medina had been retired for 17 years but he is third generation pg&e and could not ignore what happened. when it became clear that records of seamless pipe were wrong and records might be at the heart of the accident he left messages with pg&e executive to tell him where the records should be. they said well we are convinced we can't find the information and it probable never existed. my blood boiled that because i knew it existed. i was being paid ten years to manage it. he told n.t.s.b. he got back to him in september but they contacted jackie speier speer's office. he came forward not to harm pg&e but to help. i feel very sorry for the people harmed and any others that might be harmed from lack of information being available but i know the information exists and i have a feeling it still exists. >> pg&e thanked the ntsb for their work and it will continue to work to gain confidence of their customers. there will be a final report that is august 30th for release. >> coming up
