abc 7 news transportation reporter heather ishimaru explains what that is. >> reporter: iron workers pound on the suspension cable with rubber mallets and another measures the circumference. old fashioned manpower is still needed to build a bridge not so different from when one of america's oldest bridges was designed, the brooklyn bridge. >> that is typical to suspension bridge packing. >> the cable is made up of 137 strands of wires. 127 wires in each strand. this cal trans video in fast forward shows how the 137 strands were looped one by one around the bridge and up and over the tower. they then had to be compacted. >> the able has voids or big holes. it it compresses all of the individual wires down slightly so you almost is a solid piece of metal. it protects against corrosion and makes the cable stronger. >> the workers pound the cable first so the wires settle and align and then a compactor presses them together at 500-pounds h per square inch. precise measurements to have be met. the next big step will come in late summer when the temporary support structure is removed and a
