heatherishish -- heather ishimaru got a look. >> reporter: originally the plan called for opening thebound side first, followed by the eastbound side in 2014. the problem was not enough room to build the new road in the footprint of the old. engineers solved that problem and lopped nine months off the original schedule. >> we are always looking for ways to improve the job to get it open faster. our engineers took a risk, designed this whole project and put in contract out and now we are moving forward quickly. >> reporter: the tricky oakland touchdown is where a lot of work is going on right now. foundations of the old westbound bridge has been knocked down. the water rises and falls with the tide what is now a kind of pool will be filled in with concrete. >> what we were able to do is using something called lightweight concrete that is buoyant it can rise and fall over the years with the changes in the level of the water. >> reporter: the plywood forms of the deck are going up fast. getting ready for concrete to be poured in the next couple weeks. for anyone hoping to get a boat's ey

heather ishimaru, "abc 7 news". >> katie: speaking of getting around the bay area there a closure youuld know about. you want to be aware of right now. harrison exit from the bay bridge, is closed this morning it may have wrapped up. it's supposed to be closed until 8:00 a.m. eastbound highway 4 will be closed monday morning from midnight until 5:00 a.m. for a freeway widening project. a detour will be provided but drivers should expect delays. starting next friday, san mateo bridge will be closed two weekend needed a row. it will close in both directions for seismic repairs. caltrans crews will be replacing 12 sections of the bridge deck. that work will take place the weekends of october 19th and october 26th. they expect to reopen the bridge by 5:00 a.m. monday. >> coming up next, police response times, under pressure in san jose. only on 7, emergency responders say it is proving to be an issue of life and death. >> we have a live look outside, gorgeous morning here in san francisco. look at the bay and the sky and the golden gate bridge just gorgeous and more sun still ahead. lease

heather ishimaru with a look tonight at impressive military hardware which arrived today. >> reporterbious navy craft came slashing into san francisco's ocean beach from a carrier 8 miles out. it was carrying heavy equipment that could help san francisco recover after a natural disaster or terror attack. >> this is an incredible example of the kind of activities that may have to happen and the more we practice it the more we will be ready for it. >> reporter: it was a joint army navy drill and an opportunity to remind san franciscoians that they do humanitarian mixes along with military. >> what you see here today onboard this craft is just a single demonstration but certainly the craft can replenish itsself back to the ship numerous times. >> reporter: arriving by sea and by air the marines landed two helicopters in the sleepy outer sunset at lake merced and there picked up civilian medical professionals to acquaint them with what the military can do if called upon to help. the pilot is enjoying this mission of show and tell. >> it is great to come up here and show the locals and the
