heidi zhou castro joins us now from fort hood. heidi, what are we learning from that testimony. >> hassan indicated he will not present any witnesses, and he will not present any evidence. so what we're left with is most likely an unsworn statement given to the courtroom. this is not suspect to cross-examination nor is it subject to runningses from the judge. right now we're having a lunch break from the proceedingses and for hassan to have time for his daily prayers. we should expect to hear from him. in the courtroom will be many of the survivors and families members of the 13 people that asan cooled. among the survivallers i surviv, he was shot two times by hassan and lived with ptsd ever since. he said, quote, when i go to the pharmacy, they have all the chairs lined up. when i go in there i don't do well. the signs from the trauma of the shooting that happened four years ago still visible in the survivors and the heartbreaking stories of parents and spouses who lost their loved ones. >> heidi, this has got to be the other side

heidi zhou castro has more. >> each individual will make a statement. >> reporter: 13 families waited almost four years for this day. >> this has been a very long and exhausting process. we are tired, we are hurt, but we are resolved. justice has been served. >> reporter: the former army major who murdered their loved ones was sentenced to death by lethal injection. it's what many of the families of the dead and wounded want for and what was canned for. he will never be a martyr because he has nothing to give. do not be fooled. he is not giving his life. we are taking his life. this is not his gift to god. this is his debt to society. nidal hasan showed no signs of emotion as he heard the verdict. he made no attempt to plead for his life before sentencing. offering little in his own defense throughout the trial. hassan was his own attorney. he indicated from the beginning that he wanted to die. one by one relatives of those massacred took the stand to talk of his loss. >> my father will never come home, his laughter to our ears, his smile to our eyes, but justice is now here. >> repor

live with us from the texas army post is heidi zhou-castro.assan admitted to the shootings, but has he shown remorse since the proceedings began? >> no remorse whatsoever. he was emotionalless. yesterday as we heard one after another, family members of the victims talking about their unmeasurable loss. hassan declined to cross those relatives, using that soft spoken measured voice. now, there was any indication of what was going on underneath that masked exterior, he did ask for frequent breaks between the testimony, perhaps some sign of disquiet. meanwhile, elsewhere in the courtroom, you couldn't find one pair of dry eyes, because this testimony was so moving. we heard about children growing up without their fathers, we heard from one man who lost not only his daughter, but also the grandchild that was in her womb, so obviously, very moving, heart-breaking testimony that appeared to move everyone in the courtroom, everyone but hassan. morgan. >> you mentioned this emotional testimony. what's the likelihood hassan will be sentenced to death?

heidi zhou-castro joins us now. what can we expect in today's proceeding? >> well, morgan, today is day one of the prosecution's case for capital punishment. we know at least one family member of each of the 13 people killed by hassan will be taking the stand, plus three more of the wounded will be giving their testimony, bringing the total number of witnesses for the government to just around 20. the bigger question is what, if anything will hassan say when it's his turn. he did ask the judge for a break between the government's case and his own, indicating he is planning something, but morgan, you just never know what will come out of this guys mouth. he already indicated that if he were given the death penalty, he would consider himself a martyr. >> you mentioned the death penalty, heidi. what kind of problems would the death penalty really present? >> well, if he is sentenced to death as expected here, it would really present a case that doesn't have any precedence in u.s. history. the last u.s. soldier to be executed was in 1961, and he was hanged by t
