i respect senator heitkamp's comments. there are multiple factors driving up the spending that the scope of this hearing is to take a look at medicaid fraud, overpayments. that is important place to start were there is some of the lowest hanging fruit for us, perhaps is in this area that i hope we can agree on because if we fail to do this, these are important safety nets that we have and not only medicaid but i would argue medicare. medicaid spins out of control in terms of spending it puts all of these important safety nets at risk. we need to ensure we safeguard these important safety nets for those who truly need it. these improper payments in medicaid, these exponential growth rates have been a problem for years. i'm struck by the fact by i think it is about 2022, mr. chairman, where medicaid spending all in, the federal component plus the state component exceeds medicare spending in 2022, is when those numbers cross is my understanding. some what $835 billion in medicaid compared to $828 billion and medicare and i do

you know, joe manchin as you mentioned and heitkamp and joe donnelly, they voted for gorsuch., what do you expect from them? >> we do know that they voted for brett kavanaugh's nomination to the d.c. circuit, the position that he currently holds on the circuit court of appeals. so i mean, if history is a guide, i mean, kavanaugh had a tough time getting to that point because of different, you know, sort of thicks that came up with his -- sort of things that came up with his nomination in the early, mid 2000s, but they did vote for him as a circuit court nominee. and collins and murkowski, you know, are not -- this seems a little different than other times that they have departed from the republican party line, like with the affordable care act debate last year. they both seem like they are not really drawing some firm lines that they are going to cross. and it would seem that this is -- i mean, this is a fairly easy vote, i think, even if you are an established republican because brett kavanaugh comes from kind of the establishment wing of the republican party. eric: collins h
