i admire helen's tenacity. i don't know that i agree with some of her opinions on how to achieve power, but, you know, one thing that, one thing that bothers me about her -- and, again, i don't know how fair this is because it was the case with the whole era, but if you look at old issues of cosmo and even more recent issues, even from the '80s and '90s and the '00s, they didn't really give a sense that american women were diverse. and, i mean, in terms of ethnic diversity, perhaps they weren't as diverse in 1968 as they are now. it's something that, you know, occurred to me when i was hooking at old issues -- looking at old issues of cosmo, that it did seem to be speaking to a very narrow slice of american womanhood, you know, which was to say that probably middle class, highly educated, caucasian. and, you know, that was one of my frustrations with women's magazines that i worked for and that i read in my 20s and 30s and was part of the reason why i started the site jezebel, was because i really felt that i c

i was reading about helen gurley brown. she died in august of 201 2012 d her life was so colorful in this rags to riches story and it ended in arkansas again. but i just thought, that might be my computer. it was a fascinating story and i thought why don't i know more about her? the magazine covers film and helen gurley brown i understood her as this woman later in life. >> have you been a longtime reader of cosmopolitan? >> yes. [laughter] i need no, i enjoy it now. my son was a few months old when i started going through the archives from the 60s and 70s and it was so much fun. it is a good time if you have extra time on your hands. and we have a couple of original staffers of helen who was there in 1965 and eileen works at cosmo. barbara was the first person in the 1965 cosmo. i have looked and started trying to track down people doing detective work that they are not around. one lady is in denmark and she changed her name and connected me to people and that's how i made my inroads. >> i have one more question about when

saint helens. and by the way this was one of the greatest investment than anyone has ever made anywhere after correcting for inflation but in the book that they made $250 for every 1 dollar they invest in the land and that's how valuable the timber was. on march 20 of that year a magnitude 4.2 earthquake beneath mt. saint helens. in the pacific northwest we get plenty of earthquakes but we usually get one or two in things quite doubt that that didn't happen in this case. there were more earthquakes until there were so many that they ran together. you really couldn't tell them apart anymore. at this point falcon knowledges were sure that basically nothing was happening aboveground. but then the week after the initial earthquake a small crater opened up on the top of mt. saint helens. this was the first sign and these little puffs of ash began to emerge from the crater. so mt. saint helens was last active in 1967 so it had been an active for 123 years and in march of 1980 he came back to life. so the

when i started to write enter helen it was very immersive but i wanted to have my own life. i had a child at the time and i thought i can't be trucking it to queens and staten island and living all these other people's lives. i would like to have my own life so that's kind of how that -- it was a great subject and it was also something i could do. >> a couple people who knew her well said that she would and that is heartening. it's like, do i want her to like the book. i think i do but then i think maybe i don't want her to like all of it because then it wouldn't be a great depiction of her. she did a lot of great things but she had a really nutty side and did some questionable things and was a very complicated, complex person. the result is a complicated, complex portrait of her. i think anyone who read something about themselves has mixed feelings about it. i would hate to read something this long about myself, i mean really. helen chan from taiwan is one of them. she's a third year student at the college of arts and sciences. she enjoys life in japan and was hoping to land a job with a local consultancy after finishing her degree. those plans have changed. helen is now in the united states chasing down other career options. >> we also put more emphasis on academic life which is english. our japanese is not perfect enough for the japanese companies. >> reporter: helen enrolled in a course that is taught in english. that give her little time or incentive to polish her japanese. more than 15 universities in japan offer english-based degrees. that's one of many policies the government is promoting to attract foreign students. the hope is that when they dwraut they'll fill some of the gaps in a shrinking work force. but overseas students run into problems when they start looking for work. one is that local companies favor japanese speakers. not all employees speak english. so we demand a certain level of japanese proficiency. >> reporter: as a resu
