well, joining me now from new zealand is the country's former prime minister, helen clark.e you. you met queen elizabeth a number of times during your time in government. just reflect on some of those times for, us if you will. >> yes, i hosted her majesty the queen in 2002 in new zealand. that was the tenth president in the last time when she came. i last had a proper meeting with her after the wonderful service she hosted at st. georges chapel in windsor once or -- when the order of the got there was returned, my husband and i had lunch with the queen at the castle after than. but there were a number of occasions like that over my nine years as prime minister. and earlier when i was a deputy prime minister as well. >> can we discuss these comments from descended harden today she sees new zealand eventually moving away from the commonwealth. which we should note is a ceremonial roll across the globe now but doesn't see any urgency for it she also said that it is a time for reflection but it is a mixed legacy isn't it particularly a months the indigenous people can you expl

with you now, helen clark who's the former prime minister of the new zealand. talking to us this morning. you met the queen on a number of occasions as prime minister. what was that like? what were those meetings? like >> i look back and think what a privilege it was to be the prime minister and meeting the queen on behalf of new zealand. i remember the queen is located in encyclopedia. she had met so many leaders. she'd been to so many places. she'd been briefed on so many issues. you could touch almost any button, and she would know about it. she was an amazing conversationalist. it wasn't just -- she was really into the issues. if you didn't know a leader -- it was an amazing experience to have the privilege of being able to meet her. >> a lot of people talk about her putting people at ease. she had a real gift for making people feel comfortable, even though it was quite a scary experience meeting her. did you find that and did you get glimpses of her humor, which she is so famous for? >> the humor and also the personality, which was a caring personality. i t

this world tour, heading to australia and also to new zealand, and a little earlier i spoke to helen clarkoughtful, wise, curious, helpful. was she helpful to prime ministers of new zealand? do you have personal memories? i have a lot of personal memories of meeting with the queen. the last substantive meeting i had with her as pm was when i came to windsor castle where she hosted the most beautiful memorial service for sir edmund hillary, who was a knight of the garter and the garter is returned after someone passes away. remember also that sir edmund hillary's ascent of everest happened when the queen was a very young queen. and this was also seen as a high point for the british commonwealth family and citizens of the commonwealth, that he had with his sherpa, tenzing norgay, and got to the top of everest. so lots she had such a deep well of experience because her reign reign spans such a large arc of history. did you find that useful, without prying into the conversations you had with the, was it that experience she was able to share that became helpful? yes. over the queen's very long
