my name is jason henderson and i represent the hayes valley neighborhood association. we enthusiastically endorse this project. we've met -- our transportation and planning committee has met at least 10 times with the project sponsor and our general membership has met four times. and over the past two years it's been a very cordial, collaborative working experience. and they've come a long way in their design and responded to many of the community's concerns. i would say that the sfjazz team is a model for how to do community outreach and to work towards a better project that benefits everyone. you know that this is a transit-rich neighborhood, so this works really well. i like to call this transit-first jazz. so maybe that will resonate. i do want to point out that there's a couple of issues that i'd like to point out on a map here of the intersection -- what do i do here? oh, there it is. so as you know, throughout this part of the city many of the crosswalks were removed in order to facilitate the flow of cars. we're basically going to have 800 more pedestrians on t

community members from henderson, kentucky, showed their support for recovery by participating in a recovery walk. kentuckians united to walk to the women's addiction recovery manor, where a celebration was held that featured recovery speakers, refreshments, children's activities, and a balloon launch in remembrance of those lost to addiction. music i'm just amazed at a group of young people between ages of 15 and 20, who have hit bottom, who, uh, they end up in jail, they end up on the streets, they have no family ties, and i've watched those kids go to treatment and put their lives back together. kids that, everybody else has given up on, but when the parents get involved get back involved, and the kids-they're miracles, they're miracles. i work on the other end of the street also and try to intervene on kids real early because if we can stop it, if we can intervene on their drug use and get 'em straight they won't end up like that. i think treatment does wonderful wonderful things. but i don't want my grandchildren to end up there. so that's why i work on both sides of the street. i feel

one of the highlights of justice sotomayor's hearing last year was senator sessions who told wade henderson, we're going to do something about that crack cocaine thing. many people joked about senator sessions choice of words, but i heard him and followed up on it because i was glad to hear he shared my interest in this important issue. he was referring to the crack powder disparity in sentencing in the united states, which is one significant cause for a record levels of incarceration and racial disparity in our system. it takes 100 times more powder cocaine than crack cocaine to trigger the same mandatory minimum sentences. crack cocaine sends the same five year mandatory minimum sentence as selling 500 grams of powder cocaine. senator sessions is a man of his word. earlier this year, the committee unanimously passed legislation to reduce the crack powder disparity from 100 to 1 to 18 to 1. some of us had hoped for 1 to 1, or some other configuration. but this was, in fact, a wholesome bipartisan agreement that was reported favorably with an overwhelming vote from this committee. in 1997,

you know, just this weekend, i heard from one family, a young couple, matt and his wife from henderson with their young children. they had worked very hard to get out of kind of a rough neighborhood to move to a better area away from gangs so their children could grow up in a safer environment. lost his job and we're trying to help him with loan modification. if he can't get these unemployment benefits, he's not going qualify for loan modification. he's going to lose his house and he's worry head may have to move into his car with his two small children. he's relying on these unemployment benefits just to help him scrape by just for a short time so he can make those payments and stay in that house. so that his family will be safe. those are the kinds of stories that we hear and that's why the opposition's obstructionism is just so insulting and so hard to believe and understand. so we've got to stand up and fight for these people who are at the risk of losing these important benefits. you know, it's bad enough that the republican economic policies from the last administration, policies
you know, just this weekend, i heard from one family, a young couple, matt and his wife from henderson with their young children. they had worked very hard to get out of kind of a rough neighborhood to move to a better area away from gangs so their children could grow up in a safer environment. lost his job and we're trying to help him with loan modification. if he can't get these unemployment benefits, he's not going qualify for loan modification. he's going to lose his house and he's worry...
