i'm joanne hendrick. i wrote the book the whole child so that parents, teachers, and caregivers would have an additional source to go to for guidance, direction, and most importantly, for support. our children ask an awful lot of us, as well they should. but just as we need to be there for them, so i hope my book, and now this television series based on the whole child, can be there for you. on this program, the issue is self-discipline and control, and our challenge is to learn how to teach the youngsters in our care not only to know what is right, but to do what is right. hendrick: but where do we start? how do we even begin tapping into our children's creativity and help them fulfill their need for self-expression? we can start by providing activities that are based on the children's interests and ideas. this part is the player. woman: you didn't paint no stars and no hands? no. hendrick: this means learning how to listen intently to what our children are saying during group time and during play. you were playing with me? girl: yeah. i was teasing you. hendrick: it may even be helpful to tape-record and transcribe the children's conversations, as well as take notes, and then review them with your co-teachers. i made a picture for you. that's you. you made a picture for me? yeah. hendrick: we can offer children a wide range of creative materials and experiences. being creative is more than drawing or painting pictures or playing with play-doh. there's also photography... music... field trips... working with wire, clay, paper, wood, water, or shadows, just to name a few ideas. girl: gi

sexually violent predators under constitution the supreme decisions in kansas versus hendricks and kansas versus crane, the supreme court said that under the constitution in order to civilly commit, to not criminally, but to civilly commit a sexually violent predator, you have to demonstrate two independent factual constructs. one is you have to demonstrate lack of volitional control, which is defined legislatively as mental abnormality which often gets find as a personality disorder. anti-personality disorder. the second construct you have to prove is they're likely to be violent in the future. now on the civil side, those both ought to be factual judgments. does the person lack volitional control and does the person, is the person likely to be violent in the future? if, however, we are actually using at least the first construct, not empirically but we're using it normatively. then we are potentially violating two provisions of the constitution. what you're essentially doing is calling upon the fact finder, whether it's the judge or jury, you're calling upon the fact finder to make a ju

i've recently started reading a book "who stole the american dream" by hendrick smith, a book that our whip, mr. hoyer, has often referred to for our caucus to read and it details exactly how the middle class has been under attack for the last 40 years. largely due to a corporate takeover of our culture. i highly recommend this book to every american. this is a book that says americans are willing to accept inequality in our society to a degree. they understand that if you work harder, you should be able to get ahead. but they want it within a percent that makes sense and we've had for this country for so long. this massive wealth gap in our country, where the top 1% captured 93% of the nation's gains in 2010, undermines our social fabric and the idea of equal opportunity. this has been caused by the way corporate interests have taken over our lives, our laws and our elections in the last several decades. according to "who stole the american dream," until the 1970's the middle class thrivinged and increases in prosperity were matched by increases in wage. when prosperity was shared tha
