i'm joanne hendrick. i wrote the book the whole child so that parents, teachers, and caregivers would have an additional source to go to for guidance, direction, and most importantly, for support. our children ask an awful lot of us, as well they should. but just as we need to be there for them, so i hope my book, and now this television series based on the whole child, can be there for you. on this program, the issue is self-discipline and control, and our challenge is to learn how to teach the youngsters in our care not only to know what is right, but to do what is right. [children laughing] hendrick: we all dream about days like this, when the little ones are on their best behavior and all is peaceful and harmonious. but in the real world, we all know these moments are few and far between. in the real world of childcare, children, like adults, just don't always get along. michael, we got to share! i had this one first. hendrick: how many of us have found ourselves in this situation? in the heat of the

hendrick: predictability is the key.maintain our self-control and don't fly off the handle too readily, we encourage the children to trust us. the children can predict what our responses will be, and this breeds confidence in the relationship and keeps them from feeling too anxious. teacher: i just told you. this is it. teacher: no. it's all gone. thank you, big girl, for being my good listener. thank you. teacher: stevie jay, books are for reading. do you remember? girl: this one. teacher: ok. just one moment. hendrick: what else do you think would work? children will feel more confident with us if they know we don't expect too much or too little from them. it's so important to remember that rules and tasks should be appropriate for the child's age and abilities. for example, with 2-year-olds, it's best to stick to simple rules and immediate consequences and save those longer discussions and multiple choices to use with the 4s and 5s. clean up. right. clean up, please. teacher, voice-over: when the children come into sc

hendrick: how do we begin to help that child? what are our responsibilities, obligations, and expectations? when working with children with disabilities or special nds, how do we define achievement? [telephone rings] hendrick: let's review. did you notice how our teacher wasn't really facing the family member? eye contact is essential in face-to-face meetings. did you notice how the teacher barely moved her head during the meeting? nods or affirmative shakes of the head convey that you are really listening. what does it tell the parent when a teacher sits back with her arms folded? this type of body language may communicate that you're feeling defensive. and what did you observe about the teacher's facial expressions? did you notice our teacher's control or lack of control over her environment? reducing or eliminating classroom distractions is so important when we're trying to talk with someone. nonverbal communication is only part of the process. the family member needs to know that you understand what they're saying. that's where paraphrasing, or the act of listening and rephrasing what people say to you, comes in. first, paraphrasing for facts. let's see what can happen when we don't paraphrase accurately. thank you f
