i'm joanne hendrick. i wrote the book the whole child so that parents, teachers, and caregivers would have an additional source to go to for guidance, direction, and most importantly, for support. our children ask an awful lot of us, as well they should. but just as we need to be there for them, so i hope my book, and now this television series based on the whole child, can be there for you. on this program, the issue is self-discipline and control, and our challenge is to learn how to teach the youngsters in our care not only to know what is right, but to do what is right. [children laughing] hendrick: we all dream about days like this, when the little ones are on their best behavior and all is peaceful and harmonious. but in the real world, we all know these moments are few and far between. in the real world of childcare, children, like adults, just don't always get along. michael, we got to share! i had this one first. hendrick: how many of us have found ourselves in this situation? in the heat of the

hendrick: but where do we begin?rt teaching in this new and exciting emergent fashion? there are many books on the subject, but here are a few of the basic ideas. first of all, it's important for us to understand how valuable it is for children to come up with their own ideas, figure out answers for themselves, and try a variety of their own solutions until they find one that works for them. woman: i think clare put something in there this morning. you found a little piece of a what? child: carrot. why do you think bunnies like carrots? 'cause they're really tasty. hendrick: besides paying attention to their questions, we need to ask them questions, too, and wait for their answers-- their answers, not ours. traditionally, we're used to asking our questions and expecting facts or information as the answer-- for example, "what did we talk about yesterday?" or, "which is the round one?" or, "i wonder who's wearing red socks today?" but the emergent approach requires that we ask questions in ways that provoke children in

hendrick: what can we do to keep this from happening? how can we ensure that our children's daily routines-- their middle moments-- are meeting their needs in a way that is nurturing, flexible, and positive? girl: ok. ok, bye. the rest of your friends are in the lunchroom. woman: can i go and put up the stuff? sure, go right ahead. how are you doing today? fine. camille and brian's medicine, the same one, and thanks for finding it for me. daily routines make up the backbone of a child's early experiences. how we handle these tasks not only sets the tone for the rest of the child's day, but it also lets the child know she's being nourished and well cared for. she's a little shy right now. here you go, precious. ♪ good morning to you ♪ good morning, good morning ♪ ♪ good morning to you ♪ our day is beginning ♪ there's so much to do ♪ good morning, good morning ♪ good morning to you there are several principles we can put into practice when we set our schedules, provide meal and snack times, help children separate from their parents, begin

hendrick: predictability is the key. when we maintain our self-control and don't fly off the handle too readily, we encourage the children to trust us. the children can predict what our responses will be, and this breeds confidence in the relationship and keeps them from feeling too anxious. teacher: i just told you. this is it. teacher: no. it's all gone. thank you, big girl, for being my good listener. thank you. teacher: stevie jay, books are for reading. do you remember? girl: this one. teacher: ok. just one moment. hendrick: what else do you think would work? children will feel more confident with us if they know we don't expect too much or too little from them. it's so important to remember that rules and tasks should be appropriate for the child's age and abilities. for example, with 2-year-olds, it's best to stick to simple rules and immediate consequences and save those longer discussions and multiple choices to use with the 4s and 5s. clean up. right. clean up, please. teacher, voice-over: when the children com
