hendrickson broke into the world championship ranks in 2013 at age 19.tions. and was named world champion that year. fresh off her title, sarah was soaring toward the 2014 olympics in sochi, russia. but just six months before the games she crashed during a jump in germany and tore the acl in her right knee. what did it feel like to go down with that knee injury so close to the thing that you worked your whole life for? >> it was devastating. i think that's the best word to describe it. and everything kind of flashed before my eyes. >> compounding her frustration was the fact that the sochi games were historic in her sport. after a long battle, 2014 was the first time women were allowed to compete in olympic ski jumping. >> it was traditionally, a male sport. females were just not really allowed to do it. they were told no, no, no. >> ioc argued women's ski jumping was not practiced widely enough around the world. one ski official even made a 1950s era argument that the sport was dangerous from a women's reproductionive system. >> it's like jumping down f

flight again. >> reporter: do the numbers. 20,000 jumps at three seconds each, and sarah hendricksone you just holding everything so tight? >> i'm not sure about breathing or blinking. >> it's the best feeling in the world. >> reporter: hendrickson didn't just fly into first place. she soared into history. she's just 23 years old and four years ago became the first woman to ski jump at an olympic games ever. for nearly 100 years the sport was almost the emblem of the winter games. a ski jumper soaring down a mountain and another crashing in a windmill of limbs and skis. a good jumper can clear the length of a football field, traveling at up to 60 miles an hour. it wasn't until 1996 that soccer opened up to women when mia hamm and the u.s. team finally won gold. boxing wasn't allowed until 2012. >> i hope to get in the olympics one day if they ever get women to the olympics. girls are exactly like boys because we've been jumpers for just as long as they have and that's the way and how it should be. >> that was way back in 2006. >> i was always fearless as a kid. >> reporter: and equal
