joining me now is henry fernandez, senior fellow for the center for american progress and joan walsh of salon.com. thank you both for being here. >> good to be here. >> joan, what's worse, what donald trump said or the fact that others are going along with it? >> i think the fact that others are going along with it. donald trump is who he is. this is the trump effect. this is what he's doing to the race. he's pulling these candidates to the right. scott walker was totally incoherent in that answer. >> he said follow the law like he never read -- >> he said yeah -- right, that would be against the law but casey asked him and he said yes twice. they didn't support it but they didn't oppose it and come out and morally say this is a terrible idea. people deserve that birthright. so, you know, also, i think it's really, it would really create a kind of police state to enforce it. what's he going to do? put them in cattle cars? buses? >> henry, i mean, to me the thing that is so disturbing, first of all, how do you find -- >> house to house. we're already dealing with a law enforcement que

henry fernandez for the center for american progress. gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen.started your engines? >> do you know what's going on? what have you heard so far? >> i watched the first few minutes, you know you're in the second tier debate when the arena is empty. it looks like dress rehearsal, i'm not kidding. it was interesting that not one took a shot at hillary clinton yet or president obama. we'll see what happens, i think that santorum makes an interesting point. some candidate want to move. theyen with a the to be demoted. it gives some of them a chance to be seen. we watch it, without any audience cheering at all, it makes you focus on what they're saying. >> henry fernandez who seems to have been the strongest out of the debate so far? >> i would have to say carly fiorina, i thought she spoke clearly about her experience. she didn't have the deer in in the headlights look that several other candidates have. others have much more electoral experience. really weren't ready for prime time, i thought she really impressed in terms of just ability to command th

joining me now is joy reed, henry fernandez of the center for american progress action fund and mercedes schlep, spokesperson formerly for george w. bush. donald trump is driving the conversation in the republican party. will the topics start taking over debates between democrats as well? >> i don't think that that issue has as much residenonance an th democratic side. when you had a really hot debate it was really about reform and how to move reform forward and there was a lot of push back from the dreamers who wanted more action of the president. i think on the republican side what donald trump has tapped into and the reason he's outpacing peep like bush is he's tapped into something that's been powerful currency in american politics and media for a long time. which is essentially white resentment and white resentment of the demographic change. potent since the nixon era. resentment of the changes taking place. donald trump has tapped right into that and a lot of that resentment is directed at what they are calming illegal immigrants which is a sort of catch all i think in a lot of way

. >> i'm joined by hearnnry fernandez and jenaveve wood. henry, is he going to win the latino vote?hat do you make about the polls that show republicans have confidence in the donald to address immigration policy. >> there is no question he's not going to win the latino vote unless something dramatically changes. he currently has support about 13% of latino voters. and let's understand this is a very fast growing voting block. when president obama won latino voters in 2008. since that time 5 million more latinos have become voters in the united states. so this population is essential to winning an election. latino decisions kind of the premier pollster of latino voters states the republican candidate will need 40% to become president. donald trump is at 13%. he's not close. >> jenaveve what are the policies people find so appealing when they say they have confidence in his ability to address these issues? >> i wish they would have asked that question in the poll. what you have is people are reacting because they are concerned about the issue, concerned we have a lot of people living
