sanchronicle henry lee joins us. good evening, henry. tell me about this burglary that led to the gun being stolen. >> well, greta this car burglary happened just four days before the shocking pier 14 slaying that ended kate steinle's life. the stolen gun belonged to a brew of land management ranger a federal manager who was in town on business. and this gun was stolen. we don't know by who. but this gun was used to kill the 32-year-old woman. very tragic development indeed. >> how far is pier 14, if you know, from where this vehicle was from which the gun was stolen? >> well, pier 14 is right at the edge of downtown along san francisco bay. the car burglary happened somewhere in downtown san francisco. so it's not too far. now, keep in mind, that this suspect is claims that he found the gun secreted in a shirt on the pier and the gun went off accidently. there are unanswered questions was this an accidental discharge as he claims? did he steal the gun from the car? a lot of questions here at this point. >> only one bullet fired at kate

[laugh] so we knew that we were being relied on by brian. a few weeks back, mrs. lee called brian early in the morning to tell him not to bother picking them up because they were already at the hospital. mr. lee was ill and she had taken him to the er. the next day or so, brian, on his lunchtime, found out that mr. lee had been admitted to the hospital and he went up to mr. lee's room and just stuck his head in just to say hello. and the minute mr. lee saw him he went [gesture thumb up in the air] like that. and mrs. lee said, "he's telling you again you're number one driver. so brian really appreciated that; he thought that was really sweet. but he could see mr. lee wasn't doing so well so he left really quickly. and unfortunately, mr. lee passed away that evening. that had a great impact on brian and me. it was very sad, but it was so touching that he had seen mr. lee and mr. lee had confirmed that brian w
