he's an actor, director, writer and film—maker, whose credits range from hamlet to tenet, from henry vo thor. we spoke in the very atmospheric radio drama studio of bbc broadcasting house. ken, welcome to this cultural life. thank you. a show about cultural inspiration, cultural influences. what is your earliest cultural memory, do you think? something that had a big impact? i think, early doors, i can remember winston churchill's funeral, i think it was 1965, seeing it on the television and just being told about the great man. the world cup final of 1966, where the nation stopped. and in our own household, my brother had a sort of flirtation with meningitis which was very dramatic, as you know, those can be fora minute, and then he was fine, thank goodness. but i watched the world cup final in a neighbour's house. and ijust remember in both those cases, in belfast, as i was, i was very aware of a national event, or at least, it seemed to galvanise everybody and everything, and i was looking at images that said, the world is watching. wow. and you mentioned belfast there. some people,

roe v wade is a texas case. henry wade was the district attorney in my district and congressional district 30 and he was sued and was actually sued by a young lawyer by the name of sarah weddington, and she was so moved by what was going on that she decided to run for the texas state house, and as a freshman on the house floor, and february of that year after she had sworn in in january, she got a call to see because we have an actual desk and phones at our desk, she got a call on the house floor and it was about the roe v wade decision. she was like d 26-years-old. i can't imagine. i got out of law school out of 25. i can't imagine arguing a case that would be so monumental not just for texaso women, but women as a whole not only in the country but in this world. she did that, that is the kind of courage that we have that comes out. so let me tell you as a texas woman,as i am not giving up. we will fight this till the end and get texas back to the good and the richk tradition that is started with, one that promoted w
