i got into herbert hoover by invitation.it wasn't something i expected to do when i got my dissertation completed and looking for a job on the job market. i was commissioned to write a biography of hoover and it made sense because hoover as you mentioned a moment ago was a friend come a patron and a saintly figure for many of those in battled and beleaguered could conservatives so it made sense to me to transition to hoover. >> host: in battled and beleaguered is how many conservatives feel today. one of the interesting things you have said george is well gee it's not necessarily as bad as it was in the 70s. now at least there are some conservative magazines for those who don't see hope in the political process. >> guest: two points we could make there. one, there was the hoover period into the 70s there was a development presence of william f. buckley junior who was the patron figure. in 1960 let's say when the conservative intellectuals in the united states was of modest size and now we have a much more elaborate infrastru

herbert hoover makes the point in the memoirs.what i did a year or so ago while doing some research on the memoir writing and so forth amid us this before, hoover wrote several drafts and i found the draft and it turns out in the initial draft, he simply made this date men that before hoover came in to the office, coolidge had made statements, but he didn't put quotation marks around the original draft. in the typescript revision, whether secretary putting in some thing, quotation marks were added by the time the book gets published or the passage at hoover's memoirs in 1952. it looks like coolidge said this precisely that we haven't been able to find the coolidge said that at that time. hoover may have had a slip of his memory or may have been thinking of an earlier episode a year before when they had benign comments about the stock market. >> host: we all have a natural eagerness to shift blame to someone else. in that case, maybe he shifted a little much to coolidge. who is shifted a little much to hoover ingested by the song.

roosevelt was a friend of herbert hoover and rose one of the first two campaign biographies of herbert hoover way back in 1920 and was pretty good, she interviewed people and i don't think he cared for the book and highly. at any rate they were acquainted. >> host: it gives you a feel for how friendly he was, for whom he was a figure people we never would have imagined. here is your book. is not your first, perhaps your sixth or seventh relating to hoover. hoover wrote so much after the presidency. where does this fit in and what does that? >> host: this book was previously unknown to exist. in all my years of study i had never known. it was part of a set of memoirs he started to write in 1940s after it wendell willkie got the nomination and he realized that was the last chance and started to pour some of his immense energy into writing what turned into a six volumes of memoirs. four were published in his lifetime. there are two left, one of which historians know about because hoover referred to in other places but had not yet seen. after hoover died in 1964 this manuscript called the

george nash, premier scholar of herbert hoover. we are going to spend a little time now talking about the job of hoover biography. i wanted to mention some of the names of the people that we built our work on because they're is a lot of hoover work. many other hoover biographers. john wilson, the forgotten progressive to my eugene lyons mike glenn johnson meant david berner, robert merry said hoover and fishing. is there anyone to at? >> well, there are many that ever and monographs that we probably would not have time to list, but these are very eminent people. i knew all of them except for mr. lyons. one of the things that has happened in this generation is that hoover scholarship as taken off partly because his papers were opened in 1966. up to that point people had to rely and newspaper articles. now they get to see the hoover story from the inside. there has been a kind of a boom. maybe more detachment as time has passed. some of the motions of his era faded. i am happy to be in the company of those scholars. many of the asses

i worked as a guide during my college years, not a guide to make hard at the herbert f. johnson museum of art which was my university museum and i wasn't a very good guard. i don't think i would have noticed if anybody made off with any art i just sat there reading and i was also an editor of the cornell daily sun and during my senior year of college, playboy magazine arrived on campus because they were doing a feature called women of the ivy league. they were going from school to school asking women to pose and that caused a predictable uproar on campus. as is the 70s, the height of feminism and at that point i wrote an editorial defending the right of women to pose because i thought free choice, women should be free to choose whether or not they are going to subject themselves to the degradation of playboy magazine.
