herbert hoover was almost emphatically grateful. almost two months after the election, calvin coolidge died suddenly. hoover was shocked and attended his funeral in northampton. perhaps partly in gratitude for coolidge's contribution for the republican campaign, hoover in the years to come tended to suppress their past differences. to a in 1934, he denied ever been any friction between coolidge and himself. the acute underlining since of fixation that they came to feel about each other was lacking in hoover's later reminiscences. long after his predecessor passed away, hoover perpetuated the patina of diplomatic correctness that had marked the relationship in life. personal factors may also have contributed to his self-restraint. during the 1920's, coolidge's wife and hoover's wife had become dear friends corresponded for years. they eventually had nicknames for each other in the letters they exchanged. mrs. coolidge was known as lily, or sometimes easter lily. mrs. hoover was bleeding heart. i think this derived from their custom of

what also makes these book s unique is that these were owned by herbert hoover. herbert hoover purchased these at a bookstore in new york city -- i'm not exactly sure what year -- about two blocks from where he lived in waldorf towers. the books were part of his private library, sold by his family in the later 1800s, for $20. herbert hoover spent about $2700 to buy these books. now who knows what they are worth. here we are at john adams. john adams was our second president. one of our founding fathers. what we have for john adams is to seal, which he used authenticate his signature on the treaty in paris. he was sent to negotiate with the british and this seal, while the adams family did not have their own family crest, that is the crest he used, the wilson family crest, which was the family crest of his mother-in-law. then, moving on to thomas jefferson, our third president, also a founding father, we have a glass ink well and 810 name -- -- and a pen nib holder. the quill pen a lot, but a wooden holder with held a special tip which would be used to write. the

the first one when i was still alive was herbert hoover when i was a kid. i was privileged to shake fdr's hand during world war ii and harry truman's when he came back to my hometown. and harry truman was my first commander-in-chief. we should render respect to the office. the office should be sacrosanct. we should celebrate a freely elected leader. but we do not necessarily have to respect the person who is in the office. we garner respect to ourselves based on how we compose ourselves. on the constitution and how we teach governments, well, i hear it all the time "that is not constitutional." the last thing in article one, section eight gives congress the power to enact laws and those laws, by definition in that paragraph, says all the laws enacted in pursuit of the constitution are constitutional. we fought the battle, we had our founding fathers give us the veterans papers and everybody read them. we adopted the federalist papers, not the anti-federalist and we keep fighting those over and over again. the most important lesson they gave us in those pape
