now, in 1932, there is republican incumbent president herbert hoover. he was running in re-election in the midst of the great depression. there were food lines across the country. thousands upon thousands of americans living in shammy towns named after the president which are called hoovervilles. we did not have the modern welfare state so people were literally starving to death. it is fair to say it was not the ideal environment for a president to get re-elected and president hoover did lose that 1932 race to fdr by a big margin. it is remembered as a massive blowout. and it was. but look at this. with shantytowns named after him, hoover still got 40% of the vote. 40%. and that is the thing to remember. no matter how much of a blowout we think the race was, the losing candidate still usually gets around 40%. in 1984, another big historic blowout, right? poor walter mondale, right? got his butt kicked by reagan. he won 41% of the vote against ronald reagan. in a race people probably remember as a much bigger blowout. in 1980, amid stagflation, jimmy car
