here was the center of here. this band 100 miles or so out to the east that's where they had the hurricane force wind. the definition of a hurricane is a storm system that's a tropical system that has hurricane force winds anywhere in it. if it's one spot out there in the circulation it's still counts to be hurricane. but now the hurricane hunters went out there, flew all around, measured the pressure and couldn't find what the national hurricane center thought qualified as hurricane force winds and using radar, looking at the wind with radar they couldn't find it. so that's why they went ahead and downgraded it. there's another process and that want happenings after the fact and they will go back and look at all the data. sometimes even back upgrade it and sometimes say no bill is right that 8:00 a.m. advisory it was already a tropical storm then. and they do that by re-analysis. but, you know, we won't know that for some time after the fact. right now no hurricane landfall in new york. >> got to say as you look

here's the radar picture now.is showing you the swirl of the storm, the threat of tornadoes from virginia beach. in fact, we did get one tornado warning, which is in effect right now. that includes the chesapeake area. we'll zoom in, give you a better idea of what it looks like into the center of that storm. and we still have a lot of structure around the center of it so this is where we're going to be seeing those very strong winds. this is where that surge was. you saw that video a few minutes ago of the guy saying, yeah, it's way up here, we're going to be under water. we have confirmation of that, 6 to 8 foot storm surge has been reporting common right in this area throughout the outer banks and some of these bays is where some of the worst of it has been. we've got reynolds wolf who's been up here in kill devil hills. they've been seeing winds continue to come in from the east like this. so that water is pipe pyling up. that rain continues to be heavy. we're going to be seeing a lot of flooding with this stor

look at some of the houses here. you can see the shingles flapping in the wind, and some of those have been ripped off by these higher wind gusts, so this is going to be some minor, minor roof repair certainly once everybody gets back here over the next couple of days. the wind is just unrelenting out here on the beach this morning. these bands and the rainfall we've had reports of already over eight inches of rain in parts of eastern north carolina. at least several hundred thousand power outages the last time i heard. could be more. that's because of the wind and the rain to get uprooted trees, but one thing is for certain. the pier behind me, jeanette's pier that was taken out eight years ago is going to with stand this one. it's built to a cat three. they have it reopened in may, and it's looking pretty good despite these 14, 15, 16 foot waves out here in nags head. we have a couple more really strong bands associated with the center of the storm. the tide is going out. that's a good thing. we're still getting ou
