the main concern here was in terms of adding new jobs. >> tom: what about the picture of energy security. this was seen as a more secure source of oil and energy for the united states. again works this pipeline, without this secure source what does it mean for u.s. energy supplies? >> well, it means that we continue to be dependent upon the variety of potentially more volatile sources. over the past several years hugo chavez in venezuela has occasionally threatened to cut off supplies to the u.s. that hasn't happened yet but there's still concerns that he might at some point in the future. we still get a considerable amount of oil from mexico but their reserves are starting to slow down in production. and of course we have seen upsets in or disruptions in supply over the past year just based on what has been going on in the middle east and north africa. >> tom: this is a different type of oil obviously coming from canada down to refinery row where you are at. is the industry ready, would it be ready to refine this oil in3w to gasoline and other products? >> well, they certainly claim th

nice to see you again. >> thank you, tom, nice to be here, always. >> tom: so what do you think is contributing to this investor exhaustion and not panic? >> oh, boy. the exhaustion, i think is kind of easy to figure out. i mean day after day of one money points to the upside and downside. investors are being deluged with all sorts of different types of news. i mean, even today, whether we were going to hear whether papandreou was going to go ahead with a vote, he wasn't going to do it. he was going to resign, europe was going to collapse. m.f. financial is back on the ropes. investors don't begin ton what to make of all of this noise and they certainly don't like the volatility. >> tom: how do you protect against exhaustion and stay in it for the long run? >> that's really what you have to do. you have to fend off emotion at pretty much every chance that you can and go back to your discipline, go back to your philosophy, and really as important as anything else, know yourself. it's the pointf my book "the arrogance cycle," which is just out, "the arrogance cycle." we talk about knowing yoursel

growth in an exclusive interview with me at his offices at the new york fed, just blocks from here. >> tom: dudley was clear the fed still has plenty of ammunition to boost growth. that firepower includes more bond buying and more open communication about the economy. but he also says the fed can't fix the economy alone. it needs what he called "complementary" initiatives from others, including congress. >> susie: dudley plays a key role on the fed's committee on interest rates, and he is second only to chairman ben bernanke in wielding power over policy. he got the job nearly two years ago in the middle of the worst financial crisis in decades. his colleagues today are divided on what the fed should do next-- take action now or wait to see if the recovery stalls further. i began my interview with dudley by asking him how the economy is doing. >> things are getting a little bit better. second half of the year growth is definitely stronger than the first half. we've seen a little bit of pick up in employment growth but not what we want. unemployment rate is still too high but the outlook is
