there are about 40 of them here. we think there are many other graves here as well. they likely were filled in when the slave community was still actively taking care of the cemetery prior to emancipation at the end of the civil war. some of the grave sites were actually marked with large stones. big quartz stones which are pretty rare in this area, so they clearly were gathered and brought to this location and placed on the graves as a marker. but there are no names. there's nothing to indicate the specific individuals in each of the burial sites. we have done enough archaeological work to confirm, again, the grave shafts were dug. again, we have not excavated any of the remains, and that's not our intention. an oral tradition that descendants of montpelier slaves have told us that the periwinkle you see here was planted intentionally to help mark this area. because it blooms in the springtime. and so it linked into ideas of rebirth and resurrection that are part of the christian religion that had become part of their lives. this is not the only slave cemetery here

you can identify the pattern from the edge here and the pattern right here. these are the artifacts. here's a wine bottle fragment. the class weglasswares can be w. we use a toothbrush to clean them. if you submerge this in water, it's going to destabilize the iron and it's going to begin to corrode at the items that are more diagnostic, the iron items that are more diagnostic, we conserve. this appears to be part of maybe a five blade, for cutting grass, a large size. and this is the blade portion and it's just corroded away in this area. but if we didn't conserve these items, what would eventually happen to them being out of the ground, the rust would accelerate and eventually fall apart. what we do is we put them in these conservation tanks where we run electric current through a solution of baking soda, and it fluffs all the iron rust off it until you get down to the bare metal. the next step in the conservation is to use a dremel tool to clean off the remaining rust. then they're washed in a solution of distilled water, boiled in distilled water. baked i

what do we have here? . >> what we would do on the inspection is start with the outside of the building, take a look at it. this is the automatic sprinkler connection for our fire engines to hook up to so we want to make sure it's clear, it has covers on the inlets so nothing could be put in there to block it. this is a little unusual that we have the fire control panel location noted out here because it's not at the immediate front entrance of the building, so it gives direction to our fire companies where the fire alarm control panel is so we can take a look at it next. >> fire control panel at rear entrance. why don't we walk around to the rear entrance, see if we can find it. so here we are at the back of the town hall restaurant. they take the first two floors and the third floor is marin day school and the top floor is day space. they share an exit. here we have the control panel and the light is in the green and the system is normal. so that's one of the things we look at first, that the fire alarm
