good morning and welcome to the heritage foundation. we are glad to have everybody here at the auditorium and also online and of course the viewers of c-span as well. really i would like to make some brief remarks before introducing my colleague and the driving force behind the report and then i will come back up and we will moderate a discussion with some ofof the members. we have been privileged to be able to convene and provide support for the nonpartisan commission on china and covid-19 to produce this special report here. a year ago when the idea of the commission came up to hold china accountable for their role in the pandemic, kevin roberts and i said this is a great idea. but the only way we can do this is if it's nonpartisan, full of experts and contains members with a wide range of political views. when covid-19 hit the united states in early 2020, it was indiscriminate. the virus didn't to determine if one was a liberal or conservative. it struck with a vengeance and upended all of our lives. with that in mind, we asked direc
