kahn and met herman kahn and became completely enthralled with herman kahn in so many ways.e details about stanley kubrick's interaction with herman kahn can be found in two recent kahn biographies one by a former hudson called "super genius: the mega world of herman kahn" and the other biography is "the worlds of herman kahn." both of these books give you a sense of herman kahn as a colorful individual. bruce griggs is a fan of kahn and rather than than placing him in a cold war culture milieu and those who are personally sympathetic to kahn but less so to his ideas. kubrick set out to make a serious film about the nuclear threat until one day he came across herman kahn. now, herman kahn was -- if you know anything about kahn personally, he was a quick-witnessed neo-southern californian you could say born in new jersey and grew up for his first part of his life in the bronx. his native attire as you can see in the picture of herman kahn over here is the white short-sleeved shirt worn in the dead of winter and he had this ability to tell stories. and he very quickly captured

there's been a lot of talk about herman's writings. i was around herman about for years, and maybe i missed them, but in all those years i never really saw him right. use a pin or use a typewriter, using those days, typewriters. he talked. and his talks were taped. and he had other people sort of listened to tapes and put them into print. and that's the way he worked and that's what he has this long, long bibliography which goes beyond the published books to probably dozens of reports. another way that he sponged was he loved -- i did this several times within. he loved to go to bookstores. the day with the really big, not barnes & noble times, and he walked around the bookstore with a salesperson and said one of those, one of those, one of those. ship them to me that they were not for books, they were like 45 books. and when i walked into his office, it was just bolting with books. against all the walls. piled up on the desk, everywhere. and i said to herman once, how do you find time to read these books? anti-sort of smiled, and he s

in this community, i owe so much gratitude and thanks to so many of the people in this room, ann herman and the women's studies department, carol and erwig, i'm also honored that two of the really excellent research associates and assistant that worked with me on the project, sarah and sasha are here, so it's really, really wonderful for me to start the project and start the public recognition for all of us is a private process over a series of years in this particular manner. of before i get started, i'll also say that i'm also grateful to the state archives of michigan, because before this project was anything, it was an archival project. i was looking around for a very kevin project from the one that i ended up writing about. i was interested in the institutionalization and race in michigan and was really looking for any hospital records in michigan, because so many hospital records have been destroyed at this point, along with the actual -- the former state hospitals themselves. and stumbled upon an archivist at the state archives, mark harvey, who really helped me uncould have what
