herman cain kicking it off today. we will be hearing from rick santorum, ron paul, tim pawlenty, former speaker of the house newt gingrich, michelle bachmann, and representative debbie wasserman schultz. she is also the chair of the democratic national committee. joining us is jennifer jacobs, who writes for "the des moines register." jennifer, thank you for being with us. first of all, talk about last night's debate. i know there is always the tendency to place winners and losers. how would you assess the performance of the candidates? >> it sounds like i winds are pretty impressed with romney's performance. they believe he came out of the debate without any nicks or scratches, look presidential, answered the questions well, including some questions about past policy. he did well. beyond that, it is kind of mixed. lots of different opinions on who did well. some think tim pawlenty really elevated himself, others think rick santorum, others think newt gingrich. across the board. >> one of the headlines today, no more

i'm more liking herman cain a lot. i think he addresses a lot of the problems. a tea party representative, and also that kind of blows that out of the water that the reason if you're with the team, it's -- it's not about color. it's about principle. one thing that another caller said that a lot of these candidates or hypocrites, what about obama being a hypocrite about our energy policy when canada wants to pipe in energy here and they don't want to pass that. they are vill phiing our oil companies but he gives noun brazil and says we're going to be their best customer. like herman cane says, we can be our own best customer and develop our own energy. and as far as the jobs situation, he really addresses that. and he's not having all these loopholes and citizenshiplations and also the e.p.a. running amuck making standards ridiculously high and all the corporate taxes and everything that it's hard for business to grow in this country. so i think he has really some strong issues that he is, you know, bringing up that can be, you know, good for our country. >> than

herman cain says if he were president he would be shaking things up on that economic team.hat be herman first off with the guy who leads it the treasury secretary? >> yes, it would neil. it really pains me to say nat best days of this presidency are behind us. simply because, the president has put no policies on the table, such as, reducing taxes for corporations and individuals. reducing eliminating taxes on repatriated proves and taking capital gains taxes to zero. the economic engine, the business sector is not getting any fuel that's why we are in this mess. now, the debt deal was supposed to avoid default, but it didn't. the stock markets started to signal that over the past couple of days. they were saying kicking the can down the road, by reducing the increase in the growth was not enough. so i think that more speeches are not going to help. another tour to listen to the wrong people is not going to help this president. >> neil: herman, i listened to ed henry very tied into the white house. the gardner barely talks to me there. i'm leaning one is the official, we sta
