. >> reporter: well, listen, the story of herman cain's ascent is the other side of a coin that talks about rick perry's descent. the perform in the de-- the performance b in the debate, his disappointment in the straw poll in florida is really an illustration of how it is that mr. cain has benefited so directly. romney has run the slow and steady tortoise campaign. he's been hovering in the low 20%, he's been raising more money than the rest of the candidates and trying to avoid the scrutiny of a front runner. herman cain and rick perry, rick perry has experienced the bright lights and how it can singe one.

herman cain is surging. a lot of enthusiasm. why? >> he had a good debate performance and he won the florida straw poll and it gave we should be careful into reading too much in these polls. there's[ poll. one is herman cain has moved up and the other is rick perry has moved down. this race will go back and forth and up and down until people get ready to vote. people are looking at this contest in a different way. they're judging it almost like they would, you know, an olympic diving contest rather than the normal presidential contest, where they pick somebody, stay mistake, they give them an excuse. in this race it's being treated differently. >> greta: it certainly does seem he's getting a lot of enthusiasm, herman cain. i don't know necessarily he'll be the nominee, what his numbers will be tomorrow, but i have a sense reading newspapers across the country and talking to people that he's connected for meanwhile you mentioned governor rick perry. about having no heart with illegal immigration, plus the opt-out part of the vaccine.

what does this upset mean for herman caine? what does it mean for rick perry the perceived front runner? >> herman caine gives a great speech and i think this is a case of where he went out and talked to the voters and inspired them and won and upset perry. i think for rick perry this is not good news. this is someone who everyone believed to be the republican front-runner for the nomination. he had a bad debate by just about every measure and fought really hard to win this straw poll and came in an embarrassing second place. the third thing i'd mention is michele bauchmann was last in the straw poll, and she was, remember, first in the iowa straw poll, and that was something that a lot of people thought would really propel her candidacy, but now you have to start wondering whether she's actually a viable candidate in this race. >> mitchell: there are some names out there that a lot of folks thought were going to get in the race, giuliani, palin, governor chris christie in new jersey. what do you think? with this upset today, w
