jade hernandez is on the scene. what have you been able to find out?> reporter: we're learning a little bit about why this shooting happened. you can see there are squad cars behind me. a csi mobile unit just arrived we're swinging around so you can see this is where police have this blocked section off. you can see officers down at the end of the block here at concord and ash bury. police are releasing at this hour that this was an officer involved shooting and the officer or officers were not hurt. we don't know if there were one or two officers involved in this incident. police can say that a squad car was out patrolling around 2:30 this morning when a man acting suspicious was noticed as he walked down clayton. police attempted to make contact with that man. they believed he was wanted by authorities the, but the man took off. he ran down the street and eventually opened fire on the officers. the officers returned fire and shot and wounded the man. paramedics worked the man to the hospital in walnut creek. >> the investigation is just starting. it'

jade hernandez is at san quentin with the latest. good morning, jade. >> reporter: the state of california has 700 inmates on death row. the first one to be executed in years is -- has been rescheduled until thursday night. now, the execution is contingent on a few items. the 9th u.s. sir kirr court of appeals -- circuit court of appeals last night said he had to reconsider the stay and compare this with the former practices. also under consideration the availability of one of the drugs used in the execution process. that drug has an execution date of this friday. and the make irof the drug says another batch may not be -- be available until january 2011. executions have been on hold since 2006 when the federal judge in san jose found the lethal injection procedures banned. the courts are not the last line of defense when it comes to halting thursday's executions. governor arnold schwarzenegger could step in. legal experts say though he's pro-death penalty, every case is different. for now, san quentin state prison prepares for thurs

ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now from oakland with more on the story.e. >> reporter: good morning, we are live at oakland police headquarters this morning where recently 80 officers were laid off. there has been some dispute on whether or not crime is actually up in the city. last night officers were extremely busy with what resources they had. three shootings all within an hour in the city. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd avenue where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. while officers were 4e7ing that victim someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly street. officers found a women there her finger had been shot off. they rushed her to the hospital. then dispatchers sent them on their third shooting of the night to 36th and west street. two victims were found in that shooting, a man and woman, their injuries were more severe. it appears they were sitting in their car when they were shot. both of them were rushed to surgery once they arrived at the hospital and both in critical conditio

"wildfire" under the new proposal is defined to include any uncontrolled fire, urban or rural, larger than an air acre that destroyed -- than an acre that destroys houses or buildings. pg&e said the san bruno area would not be considered a wildfire. so the residents would not be affected and the utility her faces a rate increase. so this proposal, pg&e says, is really a formal. but the difference is the future was to implement the fee hike without going before the p.u.c. the commission, the p.u.c., has a right to foot the bill. >> the san bruno explosion would not apply to a wildfire. pg&e has $190 billion in liability insurance to cover costs. >> you give them a free hand, they will take everything y

we begin with jodi hernandez live in vallejo where police are having a tough time answering some of the key questions in this case. jodi? >> reporter: police are trying to piece this all together tonight, what i can tell you is that the coroner's office has completed the autopsy of the woman whose body was found in the backyard of this yellow house you see behind me. the coroner also started the autopsy of the second woman who was found dead inside the house late this afternoon. we are told it will take a couple weeks to get the results of those autopsies. we are also learning more about the chemicals police found inside the house. investigators have confirmed they removed a box labelled depleted uranium from inside the home. the atf is analyzing the contents of that box tonight to determine what was inside. meanwhile, those who knew the victims of the killing spree are grieving tonight. a steady stream of cards and flowers are pouring in to the vallejo salon where jenny worked and police believe she was taken against her will by her boyfriend. >> great gal. really sweet, really loving
