nbc bay area's jodi hernandez joins us in berkeley this morning. a new plan under way to exterminate these rodents? >> reporter: that's right, raj. the critters have done a number here in this park. look at the ground out here, the ground is covered with holes and tunnels like this one and all the digging could spell big problems for the bay. >> they are so friendly. and they are cute. >> reporter: but squirrels and gophers living in berkeley caesar chavez park are about to get the axe. the city says the burrowing rodents are threatening the health of the bay. >> these squirrels and these pocket gophers could end up impacting the entire -- not the entire but the ecosystem of the bay. >> reporter: you see the park sits on top of a landfill. and the city says the critters are digging dangerously close to buried waste f they are not stopped, toxins could be released. >> if the squirrels and the gophers are able to puncture the clay cap, you could have rain water washing into those holes and washing materials from the former landfill out into the bay.

reporting live in napa, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >>> new at 5:00, an intense afternoon in a san francisco neighborhood. a driver tried to ram a police officer with a stolen car. it started around noon in petrero hill. officers cornered the suspect, and that's when police say he tried to ram a patrol car. the officer inside fired several shots. now, it's not clear if the suspect was hit. the driver then abandoned the car several blocks away and got away. police fanned out across the neighborhood. four schools were put into lockdown. now, that lockdown has since been lifted but the suspect is still on the run. >>> also in the city, smoke could be seen for miles. take a look. after two homes caught fire. this was in the exclusive presidio heights neighborhood of san francisco near the intersection of walnut and clay street. our nbc chopper on the scene around 1:30 this afternoon. crews were able to knock down this fire within about an hour. no word yet on how this fire started. >>> okay. get ready for another change in the weather. you're looking live over san jose skies,
