i am back with herschel walker running for the senate seat in georgia. perdue, former georgia senator, candidate for governor. daviddavid perdue said he wouldt have certified georgia's 2020 election results. >> you know what's so interesting is they're going to bring a lot of attention to this race. you what happened before, and so right now i've got to run my race, but this governor race gonna heat up. you know, we have two great guys running, but we have more people running for this governor's seat, and it's going to heat up. stacey abrams has done so much, so many things in the state of georgia, but there's going to be some celebrities coming in. but do she represent what georgia values are? because some of the things that happened in georgia, i'm not sure those are georgia values there. maria: yeah. i mean, i'm questioning if the media understands georgia values. i want to ask you about race and what role does race play in politics. last week politico does an entire expose on you entitled the origins of herschel walker's complicated view ises on race.

we take a step back, herschel walker is someone who doesn't have background in public service.r with the political debates, he has a background in athletics, which is great, fine. but at the same time we have to remember he is the donald trump supported u.s. senate candidate in a swing state. he has the backing of the republican leadership in the senate. he has to have some familiarity with the basics of democracy such as voting rights. for him to struggle in complete sentences is alarming. this is something he really ought to know. >> is this a gift to democrats if he ends up being the nominee? >> well, maybe. i think that there are a lot of voters in a lot of states that don't care whether the candidates are familiar with the issues. i think that they're see an r after his name, and republicans will vote for him anyway. and there are people who see raphael warnock with a d after his name and vote for him. it's too hard to say with any confidence, i think there are going to be swing voters out there in georgia and elsewhere who want to see candidates with some understanding of

and herschel walker running against raphael warnock. what do you make of these developments, tara? >> well, i think it's part of the republican strategy. what they are doing is they are identifying minority candidates, black, api, latinx candidates, and they're finding these very far right candidates, or candidates who are willing to be far right just to run and win, just like trump. and so that's part of their strategy. and i have to say, people need to take it seriously. it's been working. part of why they made some of the inroads that they made this past election cycle at the congressional level, at some of the local levels is because they're finding these right wing candidates who are of color and putting them up to run. and these people are saying things that are dangerous. they're saying things that are harmful, that are divisive, but it's working.

it involves a political candidate in georgia, a very famous one, herschel walker, a football legend,rophy winner, former nfl player. he's now running as a trump-endorsed republican for the u.s. senate seat in georgia that is currently occupied by democratic senator raphael warnock. mr. walker, while he's very famous for his football career, he is not necessarily the most natural choice for u.s. senate candidate. shortly before he announced his bid for office, the associated press had a worrying report about the portrait of him that emerged from readily available public records, quote, an associated press review of hundreds of pages of public records tied to walker's business ventures and his divorce sheds new light on a turbulent personal history that could dog his senate bid, accusations that he repeatedly threatened his ex-wife's life, meaning he threatened to kill her. exaggerated claims of financial success and he alarmed business associates with unpredictable behavior. the history that the ap ran down included the fact that his ex-wife actually secured a legal protective order a

and i think that it is said for them to do this. >> the lewis herschel walker is talking about is johns not a senator. what did he say there? senator lewis, one of the greatest senators who have ever been. he was never a senator. he served in the house of representatives for three decades. to put his name on a bill for voting rights, i think that's a shame. it just doesn't fit with what john lewis stood for. voting rights was the cornerstone of john lewis's life's work. he was one of the key figures responsible for the landmark 1965 voting rights act. even if you can't wrap your head around, that it really is this next part of the herschel walker interview that will make your head spin. >> let's go to the writing rights. if you want to get to vote, first, you want to encourage people to vote, that's the most impressionist thing that you have. not encourage but encourage. i mean that you get things done. out don't talk about it after but get it done right now. why don't we go in and get the idea, to get everything done right now instead of waiting until it is time to vote and start talk

a lot of the other interesting things about herschel walker and his senate race is despite his majorjor endorsement, he has kept a low profile. he has tried to avoid interaction with voters, and he has basically turned down interview requests with mainstream journalists. and we may be starting to understand why that is. this is a clip from a recent interview mr. walker gave on a far-right internet or talk radio show. >> let's just watch over it. sink into this. >> raphael warnock doesn't talk about inflation. he doesn't talk about the price of gas. he doesn't talk about the supply chains, disruption or anything of that nature, but he brings up voting rights, the -- the john lewis voting rights bill. what do you say about raphael warnock trying to push this during this time, trying to what i call federalize elections? >> you know, using the name of a great man to bring up something so bad is terrible to do. and senator lewis, for an african american, he was absolutely incredible to and to throw his name on a bill for voting rights is a shea. -- shame. and the bill doesn't fit what joh

broadly at the state of the republican party, there are a lot more celebrity candidates, whether herschel walker state of the gop? >> we've had candidates, candidates who could sell fun in the case of dr. oz. what tells me, dr. oz is running in pennsylvania because he doesn't see a path to winning in his home state of new jersey. carla sands running in pennsylvania, she's running because she doesn't have a path forward in california. and david mccormick who might run, who is a very solid person, but he lives in connecticut so obviously no path there. so, i think they're choosing the state where is they think they have a path. and they think that in some cases their celebrity or their wealth can propel them. i don't think this is necessarily knew. just the fact that this is a republican year that they want to run in a state where they have a decent chance for success. >> it looks like you're calling the race for pat toomey's seat a race for carpetbaggers, charlie? >> well, i'd like to say this, it's not necessarily a disqualifying issue. i mentioned sands grew up in pennsylvania. mccormick has a

you have in georgia, herschel walker who was a famous running back for the university of georgia, havinglvania senate race lone, in the republican primary, you have three candidates having to defend their ties including dr. oz and defending the fact he until recently lived in new jersey. and then you have in oregon, where nick kristof filed to run for governor there, he's having to defend the fact he has enough close ties to oregon to run for governor. all of this raises the question there are so many people with these questionable ties, do these charges really matter? and we sought to answer that question. and what we found is based on operatives and academics is that there are two reasons that these charges may not be as potent as they once were. the first is polarization. once you get past the primary, most people are just looking for the d or the r next to your name on the ballot. and that has led people to overlook the fact that they don't really care if you're from around here or have close ties to a certain area. second is the nationalization of politics. the more nationalized rac
